Undergraduate / "My Battle Against Obesity" - 'something in your life goes unnoticed/ why it's important'; MADISON [2]
Consider something in your life you think goes unnoticed and write about why it's important to you.

Obesity has become a global epidemic, the bubonic plague of the 21st century. Cast a quick glimpse around you, I am certain that you will notice an obese person. No matter how you look at it, the situation is daunting, and that's a fact.
In the past, I used to be extremely overweight myself. Actually, I had been like that since I was a child. I knew that both my parents and me were to be blamed, but I also knew that putting the blame on somebody-regardless of whom-would be like flogging a dead horse. Fortunately, I was accepted by the majority of my peers and did not face many troubles barring the occasional bullying by the older ones.
However, I was aware that I was the exception rather than the rule and that it was only a matter of time until people began shunning me. As time passed, many of those who formerly saw me as their equal simply forgot about me. I decided that it was about time I did something about it, and so my battle against obesity commenced. It was this battle that opened my eyes to an enormous quality that had been going unnoticed my entire life: perseverance. With the aid of my newly-found ally, I emerged victorious out of the battle, but yet, I was left in awe and wonder. An enigma was now engraved in my head: "Why am I still not accepted as I want to be? Why is everyone oblivious to my perseverance and the change I am going through, and is this perseverance really a determining factor?".
Spending many sleepless nights, I kept thinking and thinking, analyzing and analyzing, until I came up with answers I was satisfied with. If one could call them answers, that is. I just found solace in the fact that it was my life and that I should not be held captive by the opinion of those who do not genuinely care about me. But, more importantly, I came to realize the importance of perseverance, a quality of mine that went-and still goes-largely unnoticed. Would Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr. have succeeded if they had lacked the staunchness and steadfastness? Would the United States represent the ideal of freedom so vividly if the Founding Fathers did not pursue their dreams so doggedly?
That, I believe, is where the power of perseverance lies. In my journey to UW-Madison, I will not only provide invaluable advice and help those battling obesity, but also input my unbreakable spirit into the community!
