To which degree are behaviourism and cognitivism reflected in your context of teaching and learning English? To which degree do you agree with the two mentioned theories regarding foreign language teaching and learning? Why?
Answers:
Behaviourism, which was after all a psychological theory, was adopted for some time by language teaching methodologists, and the result was the audio- lingual method still used in many parts of the world. This method made constant drilling of students followed by positive or negative reinforcement model formed the basis of the methodology.
First of all, we should pay attention to two theories: Behaviourism and cognitivism. Because they have had a profound effect in the process of language teaching
Behaviourism is an approach to psychology that combines elements of philosophy and theory. It emerged in early twentieth century as a reaction to" mentalistic " psychology, which often had difficulty making prediction that could be tested using rigorous experimental methods. The primary tenet of beaviourism, as expressed in the writing of John B. Waston, B.F Skinner and others, is that psychology should concern itself with the observable in their minds. The behaviorist school of though maintains that behaviors as physicological events or to hypothetical constructs such as thought and beliefs
About cognitivism, cognitivism is a theory which attemps to answer how and why people learn by attributimh the process to cognitive activity. This rheory followed the behaviorist school of thought. The cognitivists quarred with the behaviorist was that their focus on observable did not account for what was going on in the mind
With the two mentioned theories regarding foreign language teaching and learning. Behaviourism is reflected clearly in the use of audio-lingual method in my context of teaching and learning English. And the occurrence of these behaviors is depentend on three elements in learning : a stimulus, a response, and reinforcement.
