Graduate / Master's degree training in public health is the key to achieving my goals - SOP [3]

My years as an undergraduate student at the XXX University and now a post baccalaureate student at XXX Uni have helped define where my interests truly lie. I am interested in the health field professor most especially the interaction and working with people; as my undergraduate years progressed haven't chanced major twice and trying to find what really am passionate about, I realized I became interested and intrigued by those courses related to health. Hence, I decided to expand my knowledge in this field by pursuing a master's degree.

Not very often do I get to tell my story or reason as to why I choose public health as a career option. It's been 13 years since my mother passed on, yet it feels like it was just yesterday. Thirteen years after her death, the community still faces the same health issues that my mother faced. Being born into the world to a sick mother is probably one of the worst things that can happen to a child. Access to health services is extremely difficult in my rural village. The facilities are lacking in quality and the conditions for health treatment are poor, most especially for the women and children.

There are no effective clinics with the basic necessities for treating the various common diseases and as a result, people suffer every day from short of proper treatment.

I have chosen to study public health with concentration in international health because it gives me the flexibility and opportunity of combining coursework with a master's thesis. A master's degree with an emphasis on research will be a stepping-stone to fulfilling my dream of obtaining a doctorate degree in public health. Ever since the death of my mother at the age of 10, I knew I would like to work in the health profession someday especially seeing the state of the environment she was in before she passed away. Thereafter, I decided to get my master degree in public health because not only am I realizing my passion for it, is the closest course that will allow me interact with people health wise. I drew my inspiration from the death of a great icon in my life -my mother. I am motivated to help, discover and develop healthy lifestyle that would contribute positively to the world and mankind in general.

Finally, after I receive a degree in pubic health, I intend to contribute to areas of need such as my home country Nigeria. Generally health in Africa has been an issue for a long time. As stated earlier, I intend to pursue a doctorate degree and expand my knowledge further in the research and development of a healthy lifestyle. Upon completion of my PhD training, I plan to work for a while in the United States and acquire valuable experience, which I will apply to back home or Africa in general. The health ministry in Africa is still to an extent, virgin. However, I hope to change this, and bring the continent to the standards of most developed countries around the world. I plan on doing so by educating people on the importance social programs can have in living a healthy lifestyle. This will be focused on working with the government in providing the social programs that are essential and more so easily accessible to even the less income earners. With the advent of globalization and healthy living, it is imperative that all countries including underdeveloped countries be included in this trend. Master's degree training in public health at XXX is key to achieving these goals.
