Undergraduate / Academics are a big part in my family - College Essay [4]

One of the things that was always told to me growing up by my family is "me nah raise nuh pretty dunse". That's in Jamaican dialect and it means I'm not raising no pretty dumb person. Academics are a big part in my family. All the adults in my family including me are immigrants. My mother once told me that the basic goal for an immigrant is to make something of their lives in the U.S., make money goes back home and live comfortably. Throughout my life I have seen how hard my mother has struggled to make sure me and my sister has had the best. So throughout school I try to do the best I can. I see myself as a persistent person. When there is something that I want I will try and reach for it. It's like something pushes me to get it. For instance, when I had tried out for twirling. I was the worst. So I would go home and practice every day. When tryouts came and I was in the big spotlight in front of all the judges, I really wanted to prove to them that I could do this that I wouldn't disappoint them if they let me on the team. So it was my tryouts and I was trying really hard and I thought I did pretty well. Unfortunately they didn't feel the same and about a week later the list went up and my name was not on the list. So I went the person who was in charge and I said I really tried hard this is something I want to do. So I went back to her every day for that past week seeing if she could get me a spot and she did. I wanted this really bad and I still go home and practice every day, I even broke my mother's chandelier practicing. If you truly want something you cannot give up you have to strive an take a chance with things. Although I like to take chances, I'm also a person who instead of making my own mistakes I learn from others. Me being a persistent person is going to help me a lot in the future. If you always give up when someone says no in the world you will never get anywhere. I also like to learn from peoples mistakes instead of making my own. You get to see what you could have done in that situation if it ever comes to you. History repeats itself but its up to you if you want to change it or not.
