Scholarship / The Scholarship Jacket [3]

The Scholarship Jacket Final Draft
Throughout the course of life, individuals work towards a goal to reap its benefits. This reward is self explanatory and shows your superiority over your peers. To achieve this reward, you must overcome some sort of diversity on your path to success. In Marta Salina's short story, "The Scholarship Jacket", the narrator, who is a studious Mexican girl, perseveres through discrimination and poverty.

Throughout the narrator's life, she has been working hard to achieve academic excellence, in hopes to receive the scholarship jacket. However, she is discriminated due to her Mexican ethnicity and family status. Marta's hopes to follow her older sister's footsteps in earning the scholarship jacket are in her vision prior to hearing a discussion between the principal and Mr. Schmidt about the jacket. Marta then realizes the jacket was going to be given to Joann because "Joann's father is not only on the Board, but he owns the only story in town"[.] Marta is furious and believes her principal is being unjust, so she turns to her wise grandpa for advice. Marta's grandpa believes "if you pay for it, it's not a scholarship jacket[.]" He then asks Marta "what does a scholarship jacket mean" to help Marta see the scholarship jacket for what it truly is. After Marta talks to her grandpa, she continues to desire the jacket, because "[i]t represents eight years of hard work and expectation."

Coming from a family of eight, Marta and her family struggled economic. During her childhood, Marta was unable to participate because her father was a laborer who couldn't afford food for his children or extracurricular activities. Thus, Marta was sent to live with her grandparents. Marta realizes she can only escape poverty by educating herself. "I had been a straight A student since the first grade". Marta's hard-work and dedication to her studies ensures her success in long run.

Marta Salina's short story, "The Scholarship Jacket", shows anyone can overcome a conflict to achieve success. Khalil Gibran once said, "Work is love made visible." This apples to Marta as she works hard to help herself and her family, whom she loves so dearly.
