Consider something in your life you think goes unnoticed and write about why it's important to you.
In this nation, public perception of a certain subject can be the difference on how we take action against it. When most of the country thinks of nuclear power, thoughts of Chernobyl, and Fukushima may come to mind, and they assume that nuclear power is unsafe. This could not be further from the truth. The same could be said about flying in an airplane vs traveling in a car. Flying in a airplane is one of the biggest fears in the world. However, compared to traveling by car, which most people do every day, being in an airplane is extremely safe. The reason for this, I believe, is that you hear of almost every plane crash that happens, because of how rare it is. If we were to hear on the news of every car death that happened in our country alone, I guarantee there would be a lot fewer people on the road. The same thing is done with Nuclear power plants. If something happens to one, it is all over the news, but do we ever hear of all of the deaths that happen in coal mines, or natural gas explosions?
From the time that nuclear power was introduced, there have been only a small amount on accidents involving nuclear reactors, with most of them happening in the developmental stage-the first 20 years, and no direct deaths happening in any of the most recent disasters, compared to the half a million estimated deaths directly and indirectly caused by fossil fuels every year worldwide. With the developments of new safety measures, and as we continue to increase our understanding of nuclear power, it will only continue to grow safer and safer.
Increasing our knowledge and understanding of nuclear power is one of the most valuable ways to protect the future of this planet, and continue to match our increasing needs for power. Think of the chaos that will arise if we run our fossil fuel supply dry. All of that is preventable by creating a stable form of power that will never fade away. It is part of my goal to be a part of this change.
Nuclear power, as of June 2014 attributes to 12 percent of the power produced worldwide, with 13 of those countries relying on this power for at least a quarter of their energy supply. This power supply, with the right education of the public, and continued funding into research, will grow exponentially year by year. The most exciting thing in my future is the chance to be a part of the change from fossil fuels to nuclear power. People often look past what's really important, looking at money as the biggest measure of success in their life. Money is not important. The greatest measure is knowing that you made a difference. We must preserve the earth for future generations. We must make a difference.
