Graduate / A society can prepare its young people for leadership by instilling in them a sense of cooperation [2]

It is a highly debated issue whether a society should prepare its young people for leadership by instilling in them a sense of cooperation or competition, and this topic can be approached from several angles due to its complexity. While some people tend to think that cooperation is more important than competition, others seem to disagree with it. Deeply deliberating over the issue, I believe that cooperation is a better way to prepare the young people for leadership in our society, and the following discussion reveals my stand and reasoning.

To begin with, there is a greater probability to work in a team. That is to say, being cooperative rather than competitive will fit you more properly in a company. For example, we always like the coworkers who are willing to help or a pleasure to work with. On the other hand, a person who acquired a great ability of competition may not be popular in a team. As a result, he has to accomplish the job all by himself. Under such circumstances, he is definitely not prepared for the leadership in any field.

Secondly, there is no one who works as a leader right from the beginning of his career. To further elaborate, all of the leaders are team players, because they have learned how to cooperate well with their colleagues when they worked as a fundamental employee. For instance, the most successful businessman in Taiwan, Yung-Chin Wang, was a rice retailor when he was young. Based on the hardship he had been through, he realizes how to communicate with all of his employees and thus build up the great reputation of successful leadership.

By contrast, there is a popular opinion that competition is the key point to being successful. As a matter of fact, under the severe competition in the business world, competition may be a crucial element to survive. As a consequence, competition may be one of the personal characters of a leader in a company.

To sum up, with the reasons mentioned above, I think that being cooperative is a prior quality for the youth to prepare with in our society. That is not to say, of course, that other points of view are completely without merit. However, I think the reasons I provided in favor of my opinion are stronger.
