Undergraduate / "Why do you choose Pharmacy?" - Personal Statement for Monash Uni [3]

Here is my PS which I describe my study in high school, the reason why I choose Pharmacy and some of my future plans. There is no length limits, but I think it's a bit long.

Dear Monash University's Admission Team,
I am currently applying for an undergraduate course in the first semester of 2016 academic year. Along with my application form and other supporting documents, I would sincerely write this statement in order to give the team a deeper understanding of myself and also my aspiration of becoming a student at Monash University in the future.

I would like to start with my great passion for science, which accounts principally for my choice of Pharmacy, because grades and certificates might not describe it completely. While typing these words, suddenly the excitement of a twelve-year-old boy learning the very first lessons of Physics and Biology came back to my mind.

It was of great pleasure to examine and understand the laws of motion and heat transfer or the photosynthesis of flora and the circulatory system and I used to be a curios and mildly annoying student who usually asked teachers about out-of-syllabus things. Subsequently, Chemistry was taught at my school. However, the teaching of this subject was extremely theoretical and did not give prominence to the wide range of applications, which actually captivate me. Hence, I did not spend much time on it. The reason I chose Physics specialized class at high school was that I could be able to do experiments and many scientific projects although sometimes the inadequate facility deter me. Personally, I like practices and real applications more than theories. Therefore, it is relatively unusual when I study Economics at university in Vietnam. Actually, after the National Excellent Student Contest, I had nearly one year to prepare for Vietnamese University Entrance Exam. Being the monitor of a class in a gifted high school, the pressure of achieving a high result was enormous and I had to study day and night for months. In addition, at the time I was not mature enough with a great lack of experiences and did not know what I really want to do. Simply I followed my parents' advice and applied for a university for businesspeople. Whereas I passed with flying colors and attempted at the university, the economic theories and a business environment are not suitable for me and also not in my interest. As a freshman, I decide to cease pursuing economic field, so there will be no more waste of time. I have been thinking for months and eventually choose Pharmacy to study.

During the first year at university, private tutor is my part-time job. While teaching Chemistry to a high school student, I recall not only knowledge but also the time I prepared for the University Entrance Exam when I really loved studying this subject and performed so well at both written tests and experiments at schools. Another event involving in my decision relates to my close friend at Hanoi University of Pharmacy. He had been sick for a few days and asked me for attending his classes at the university to take note so that he could study at home because he did not know anyone in the classes. That was when I realized that Pharmacy is an entirely practical field combining excellently Chemistry and Biology. Then I decide to inquire more about this field by many talks with my grandfather, a retired pharmacist, and a classmate in my English class, a drug researcher. Through talks, I comprehend the career opportunities of a Pharmacy graduate and it appears that Pharmacy is perfectly proper to me, as I can study scientific subjects I like and have a job that contributes greatly to the health care system by researching or dispensing. Moreover, it particularly matches my plan that I will try to do further studies after graduation and work in researching area.

I am also influenced by the idea of overseas study during my first year at university and choose Australia to be my destination. I used to study at an Australian English centre in Hanoi and the teachers there aroused my passion for the country. Although the nation's landscape is really gripping, what I like the most in Australia is its culture. I have known that this is a multicultural country with people from all over the world living in concord. As a result, I believe that years in Australia, especially Melbourne - world most livable city, would bring me great experiences, which are remarkable in my youth. Additionally, I suppose studying in Australia will help me more mature, as I have to deal with problems of international student alone and make effort to succeed in a country that always welcome and has chances for people. My choice of Monash is due to the fact that this university has a world-top Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences with appropriate courses. Along with the international fame of the university, I am excited about the competitive environment and the incentives for hardworking students. I would be very glad to endeavor to become one of the best student of Monash University.

Finally, I think that I am a person of inquisitiveness. I used to play table tennis in my spare time, but now I am taking part in a badminton club and sometimes play a football match. What is more, communicating is one of my interest and I like making friends with people from all walks of life to expand my horizon.

To sum up, I believe that I am a self-motivated candidate with a burning enthusiasm for science and a relatively mature thinking. I think that with my determination and experience, I could successfully overcome challenges of university life head on
