Scholarship / Chevening scholarship. The next pace setter of the world. Are you one of this? [3]

the deadline is about to come. please help me to correct these 4 essays. i really appreciate any comments and corrections.

1. Chevening is looking for individuals that will be future leaders or influencers in their home countries. Explain how you meet this requirement, using clear examples of your own leadership and influencing skills to support your answer.

A friend once said "you are a leader when you exchange your right to feel comfort for the sake of others, put yourself in the final order to rest after your members". This advice epitomizes the concept of leadership that stuck in my mind for so long. I consider myself to be this kind of leader because I realise that the "shepherd" is not about gaining the popularity or money, it is a pace setter that has a prominent responsibility to help the flock building its proper life.

I began my leadership experience when I was in my inland elementary school. At that time I realised that library was the tedious place among the students; small and filled with unsuitable books for that age. Then, I and friends decided to make the book mobile, supplying and bringing the good books every day to the school, with the intention of increasing the student interests of reading books. The result was beyond the expectation since the students, many times, had to be in waiting list to read them and the programme also was continued by following generations after I was graduated.

My next leadership experience came from being the chief of Central Language Improvement at my boarding school. My main job was ensuring the students in six levels to do daily communication in English and Arabic. To make it happened, I had to do daily routines; standing for hours to organise the language learning and teaching process, punishing, sleeping tardier and waking up earlier before my members, and of course being a good example of language comprehension for them. Under my leadership I could arrange the Language Olympiad and the students not only could master those languages, they also could deliver speech and do debate confidently.

Involved in many organisations and being away from home since junior high school has helped developing my independent and responsible, yet wise personality to overcome the disparities. Therefore, these experiences made me ascertain that in order to be the stronger man, I need to meet many people and face many problems; and those are the core formation of a leader. Eventually, after tasting the broader and invaluable life experiences in UK, I am completely sure to be able to run my next successful life and to be the next cohort of global leader who will certainly support the aspiration of Chevening scholarship.

2. Chevening is looking for individuals who have a clear post-study career plan. Outline your immediate plans upon returning home and your longer term career goals, considering how these relate to UK priorities in your country.

(minimum word count: 50 words, maximum word count: 500 words)

As soon as I return from UK, my direct plan is to abdicate myself in English education as the language researcher, the lecturer in university and educator in non-profit organisations. I will use my new abilities to educate the students about good materials yet inspire them to raise their awareness of language acquisition.

Then in the next two years I expect to make Language Foundation which will focus on teaching English world related to the culture, main natural resource, and the primary job of the local society. Besides, it aims to maintain traditional languages, because they are not only the heritage of local citizens, they are the legacy of the world. I will call for everybody to take a part in writing the vernacular dictionary which has Indonesian and English translation. When it is done, I will put it on the web so it can be accessible globally. Moreover, gaining the donation to fully support the programs above is also the purpose of this foundation.

I will propose the government to cooperate in building Language Museum in 5 years later. Indonesia has around 580 vernaculars but very few of its inhabitants recognise, know the story or even hear about a quarter of them. So this museum is intended to be the destination of everybody who wants to investigate or know everything about Indonesian Language and its vernaculars.

I am aware of the difficulties in pursuing my dreams but it does not prevent me to achieve them. Rome was not built in a day. I believe that big dream needs big effort and I am absolutely ready for it. I certainly have no doubt my priceless study experience in UK will expand my horizon, empower and inspire me to be the successful linguist who will give the big benefit to Indonesia, UK, and the entire world.

3. Chevening is looking for individuals with strong networking skills, who will engage with the Chevening community and influence and lead others in their chosen profession. Explain how you meet this requirement, using clear examples of your networking skills, and outline how you hope to use these skills in the future.

Experience in life has taught me one thing that I need to make connections and build enduring, mutually beneficial relationships, popularly known as networking, to be successful in life. For that kind of reason, I always entail to make as many contacts as I can with people in all types of businesses especially related to my chosen career field.

Throughout my sophomore to the next two years, I became a volunteer at organisations centralising at teaching English in several regions. To run this program well, I had to build a good connection with the local school and government to be able to conduct the English project at their regions. Committing this on my free time around college bustles helped me developing a strong work ethic and communication skills not only with the regional related parties but also with my fellow volunteers as well as supervisors.

After university graduation, I reaped the fruit of my networking skill. One of my new friends entrusted me to be the Liaison Officer in ASIAN Rowing Championship 2014. It was the most challenging experience for me. I needed to cooperate with foreigners that I had never done before. Luckily it has become the best learning experience that someone could have asked for, since I could experience new cultures and expand my networking with the citizens of many different countries.

At the private university class where I work as the teaching assistant, I encourage my students to join the social work so they can learn how the real life works and how to build a strong networking that can help them envision an actual plan to reach their goals. Besides, I also use to tell them that their skills and educations will remain nothing if they do not have the good connections with others.

The primary thing that I will do if I am awarded Chavening scholarship is using my networking skill to construct an effective and long-term relationship with other awardees, especially related to my field, who, I believe, are the outstanding people with extraordinary ideas of creating the better world. These people are essential to support my dream as I can exchange information about the current condition of language and its education in their home country. Then, together we will formulate the beneficial solutions to overcome the local and worldwide problems. I definitely have no hesitation that I will be back in actions in proofing those things.

4. Outline why you have selected your chosen three university courses, and explain how this relates to your previous academic or professional experience and your plans for the future.

*Please do not duplicate the information you have entered on the work experience and education

Language is not only the sun of every sciences, it is the identity of a nation. Losing it reflects the decreasing of national self esteem and can cause losing all the natural resources. It seems like it is too big to be considered as the impact of language, but unfortunately it is the real matter what language can cause. I never want Indonesia suffers from this loss.

I have dreams that Indonesia will always maintain its pride and the societies can master English. Indonesia language (including vernaculars) is used to reconise "who I am", whilst English is needed to broaden the networking and social outlook. To support this I have to comprehend clearly the current social condition before providing the professional solution.

Basically, I have many experiences in language field, both in education and working area. I have started majoring language in senior high school when I was captivated by the phenomenon of monoglot country and the role of powerful language in intimidating other languages. From that day on also I have been involved in many organisations focusing on teaching English.

I would very much like to further continue my interest and develop my knowledge in any of the three programmes I have chosen, Applied Linguistic (UoE), Developmental Linguistic (UoE) and English Education (IOE). I select these majors because I have observed a necessitous demand, specifically in Indonesia, in maintaining the vernaculars which are mostly extinct without any visible trace and creating new language learning system which appropriates with the local demand with the aim of satisfying the need of mastering English for all societies; the emerging language education system is unequal between the urban and rural areas.

The fact that UK has the strong cultural and educational ties with Indonesia proven by its willingness in providing the best classes for studying English and its civilisation in Indonesia (British Council) and to be the donor in providing priceless opportunities to everyone in my country to experience the top notch educational system in UK has led me to direct my vision to this country. I believe that I will be benefit from a long-established tradition of teaching in my area which is delivered by the world-leading experts and also the challenging and stimulating environment which will force me to think critically. Furthermore, it is the epitome, particularly related to my field, of strong nation which can maintain its language for about fifteen centuries and create it as an international language.

I really look forward to the chances available to get this scholarship and learn more about my passion in more depth. Those are the precious things which will strengthen my career as decision-maker and opinion-former to fully support national and global oriented programs in language maintenance and education as I complete my study.
