Graduate / Management and biology are fields that both seem to interest me equally. Admission for Biotechnology [2]

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

The mother is the first and best role model for any child; mine is a microbiologist. Her work always intrigued me since childhood and I have always wondered how something so small can have power more than a nuclear weapon. She was a motivating factor when I decided to take up Biology at higher level in IBDP. My interest in research grew when we were asked to write an extended essay where I chose biology as my subject. In my essay on "Causes of Mood swings and behavioural changes during menstrual cycle in the girls of Vishwashanti Gurukul World School," I got insight into the field of research. This led me into taking biotechnology as the major for my undergraduate studies.

During my undergraduate studies, I have been exposed to many fields of study, biochemistry, cell biology, micro biology, genetics, genomics and proteomics, enzymology, immunology, bioprocess engineering, bio informatics. However It was "plant biotechnology" and "molecular biology" that evoked my keen interest. I also got the opportunity to write an paper on Mycorrhiza and its association with legumes of Thar dessert. With all the core subjects, each semester we had a value additional course, which acted as interdisciplinary courses and helped me gain knowledge of board range of subjects from constitutional governance, finance, anchoring to cooking and bakery. Behavioral Science, being an integral part of studies, enhanced my interpersonal skills. Learning German as a foreign language has improved my performance indirectly along with increasing my linguistic ability.

As a student of biotechnology, I always believed that it is the practical work that is more important for any research. I was always more enthusiastic in my practical's and internship. In the term break after sophomore year, I did my training at the Regional Forensic Science Laboratory, Surat for 45 days. I learnt various techniques like DNA extraction, DNA profiling, Blood group test, and gas chromatography etc. In break after junior year I got the opportunity to with state's most widely recognised genetic diagnostic center "S.N.Gene Lab and Research Center" under Dr. Salil N.Vaniwala where I worked on "Molecular biology techniques for diagnostic purpose" where my focus was on BCR-ABL test which is found in 95% patients with chronic myelogenous leukaemia (CML), using RT-PCR.

Confidence is my biggest strength one which I developed during my volunteer experiences. It was during the Times of India's 'I Lead India,' which is a youth activist programme. Our task was to maker Jaipur's Walled City market, mainly Bapu Bazaar more pedestrian-friendly. To remove the encroachments and make roads traffic free; we deal with a wide range of people from civil authorities to consumers and hawkers. We informed them through various mediums like social media, street plays, debates, etc. Dealing which a large variety of people I learned to approach and convince each person was different. My work not only helped to understand the society I lived in better but also helped me to give something back to the society. I also volunteered at the "Jaipur Literature Festival" which Asia's biggest and the world's largest free literary festival. Being in transportation department I learned time management skills as I had to make sure that the authors and speakers reached their event venues on time. Coordinating with drivers and the 150 guests was not an easy task. However, I was happy to know that my work was appreciated by the guests and I was given a letter of appreciation from the event management team.

My leadership; qualities started developing in my 8th grade when I was elected the house of captain in my junior school. Later in my high school I was the registrar of the academic council. In my college, I have been in the organising committee for various conferences at my college like International Conference on Green Biotech. I was one of the founding members of the university drama club "Rangayan". We staged various plays most which were appreciated, for instance,"The Merchant of Venice" and "12 Angry Men". As a member of a new found club, a lot of managerial skills were required from production to casting to rehearsals to make it a success.

During the campus placement drive, I was thrilled to find out that I was one of only 2 students who got selected at the Mastech Inc from the university. My role as a junior recruiter at Mastech was to manage the recruiting functions for assigned positions including, reviewing applications and resumes, screening and testing applicants, conducting interviews. Developing and managing strong consultative relationships with hiring managers and candidates. Maintaining accurate records on the applicant tracking system (Bullhorn) and preparing recruiting and hiring status updates. During my tenure as a recruiter, I came across various positions like project manager, tier 3 administrators, etc., which give a better insight into a techno-functional role. It is then my decision to into a field that only allows me to fulfil my curiosity of in the field of biology but also enhances and comprehend my management capabilities.

My aim is to utilize the knowledge and training which I receive through my Masters degree to work in the biotech industry. Working in companies like Amgen, Biogen Idec, Celgene Corporation, etc., would be a dream come true. I will look to hone and perfect my practical skills before joining my grandfather's cancer research institute and hospital to take it ahead in terms of research and business; so as to contribute to the society by creating effectual technology which adds value to human life

Management and biology are fields that both seem to interest me equally. Earlier I was very confused about which path to choose for my career. I believe that the course, especially the BioBusiness track, being offered at your university clears my confusion as I am getting offered best of both worlds. This is a key factor in my influencing me to pursue my graduate studies at XX University. I am particularly looking forward to studying and Intellectual Property and Entrepreneurial Biotechnology which drew my great interest during the final semester of graduation. I believe that I will be able to contribute to and learn from the academically challenging environment at Georgetown University.
