Writing Feedback / A national issue that concerns me is the media's contribution to the rise of eating disorders [2]
What issue of local, national, or international significance concerns you? Why?
PLEASE BE CRITICAL THIS IS FOR THE COMMON APPLICATION. THANK YOU!!
I particularly would like to know if I should keep the second paragraph where it is or put it at the end?
An issue of national significance that concerns me is the media's contribution to the rise of eating disorders. Twenty-four million men and women in the U.S. struggle with an eating disorder. While there are many causes for eating disorders, the media continually has a negative impact on many young women's body images, leading to the development of an eating disorder.
This is an issue that is important to me as the media's obsession with weight loss and being skinny contributed to an eating disorder in my mother's life, as well as my own. While my mother and I have both been recovered for some time now I still see the continuous negative effects the media has on the body image of women in our country.
It is a common occurrence for women to look at themselves and feel unsatisfied with what they see in the mirror. This dissatisfaction can partly be blamed on the media's ever present place in our lives. It is hard to watch television or read through a magazine without encountering ads of skeletal models r celebrities and ads showcasing society's obsession with weight loss. The idea of what is considered "perfect" is shown all throughout the media. The difference between a healthy size and what is shown as the "perfect" size causes many to feel inadequate, creating a negative body image. Feelings of inadequacy may lead to dieting, which is not ultimately an eating disorder, but when one takes dieting to the extreme it becomes one. The media continually gives off the message that "being fat is ugly and weight gain is bad." This brings many, particularly young girls, to start an unhealthy lifestyle of disordered eating patterns. Disordered eating can be starvation, binging, purging, or a combination of the three.
