"Oedipus the king"
"Does Sophocles"
Question: Write a brief comment on the play under the title," Does Sophocles" Oedipus have an Oedipus Complex?" consider psychiatrist Sigmund Freud's famous observation. Your comment can be either serious or light.
In the play Oedipus the king, the author Sophocles bring the legend to Oedipus, the prophecy had cursed Oedipus when he is born. In the play, Oedipus the king was trying to discover who had killed king Lios, and he made a promise to the God and to the people that he would try his best to discover who murdered the king. While Oedipus was not aware that he was the killer; Oedipus still remember that he had killed someone before. So the question here how did Oedipus react when people discovered that he was the one who solved the riddle and freed his people but at the same time he was the one who murdered the king and brought the curse on his town. Oedipus complex in the play is Oedipus acting as the judge and the victim at the same time, Oedipus as a judge trying to find out who was the killer, and on the other hand as a victim trying to hide evidence and prove innocent. The complex reaches its peak at the point when the truth comes out and Oedipus is the lover and the son. The complexity of Oedipus was translated to other words as per Freud doctrine. Let examine Freud doctrine to see if applies to Oedipus.
In Freud famous observation, the Oedipus complex is a group of feelings of both desire and hostility, Oedipus as a child towards his parents, that was conforming to the legend of Oedipus the king. At which point it is resolved to a greater or less extent the choice of an appropriate object outside his family. Freud doctrine built a structure of personality for Oedipus which is fundamental in determining the formation of the personality and the tragedy of Oedipus adult desires, Freud "Greek Legend of Oedipus Rex".
Freud position has been disputed by a range of theorists, object relation theorists argue that a greater importance should be attached to the Pre Oedipal Phase," Melanie Klein, Psychoanalysts", when Oedipus engaged exclusively in a relationship with the mother in a two part structure in opposite of Freud in his oedipal triangle.
Oedipus complex is a Freudian term drawn as per Freud is an attraction part of child designed toward the parent of the opposite sex and is part of the psycho-sexual development of personality. As Freud consider this complex as a corner stone nucleus of all human relationship, some psychiatrists commented by describing love and attraction toward one parent and hatred toward another is not necessarily sexual but objection to parental authoritarian power. Freud Doctrine does not apply perfectly, however in the play Oedipus has a relation with his mother he was a husband and a son, and Oedipus has children from his mother who they are siblings and children of his.
(Columbia Encyclopedia, Literary Reference Center).
As per Freud, sooner when the baby grow he realizes that there is someone else, the father in competition for his mother's love, and when he see that his mother attention is also directed towards this other person, which lead to develop the super-ego in Oedipus personality. The super-ego is transformed to the accident at where the three roads meet which ended of Oedipus murder of his father.
