Dear all,

Please suggest a research topic to me. I am MBA in HRM and want to pursue Ph.D. in corporate social responsibility. I want to narrow down the topic to the issues related to pollution, carbon footprint etc. Please also let me know whether such a topic will fall in HRM category if environmental issues are associated with the topic I choose?

Thanks

Yes! This is a good way to begin a very focused research project. When anyone takes 2 important concepts and puts them together, it creates a unique outcome.

HRM + environmental responsibility = a unique dissertation

What is the relationship? HRM is about employee relations. Employees are motivated when they know they work for a responsible organization. Would you like to do some case studies on organizations where environmental responsibility was a theme used by HRM to improve employee relations?

OR you can look for organizations committed to environmental responsibility and interview HRM people to determine their roles, best practices, problems they ran into, etc.

Are you interested in any particular industry?

Thanks Kevin for your vary valuable reply.

I have not thought of any specific industry for the research. Since, environmental issues are fastly emerging especially in connection with the Indian industry, I found it a hot topic. I myself was interested

to pursue such a topic which is of my interest.
I was a bit apprehensive whether this topic would be too wide for a Ph. D. research. If it is to be further narrowed down, it can focus on urban industry or a specific area. I primarily want to study the state of environmental responsibility in Indian industry and then to find the ways to implement the best practices for the improvement.

Kindly suggest me if I should narrow down the topic/area of research or I can go ahead with the same.

I again thank you for your advice.

I primarily want to study the state of environmental responsibility in Indian industry and then to find the ways to implement the best practices for the improvement.

Other researchers have conducted studies to show how environmentally responsible organizations are in various parts of the world. What will be the basis for comparison?

Google this to find something great: Environmental regulation in India

So, find a professional journal article about environment and corporate responsibility in India. Can you find one with a literature review? If you find an article about this topic, ande it has a literature review, search for the articles reviewed and see what literature THOSE articles cite. Soon, you will have found lots of good articles.

Only after reading lots of recent articles about the topic are you ready to chose YOUR topic. Ask yourself: what have other people done? What questions need to be answered now?

What does your adviser have to say about your choice? Have you Googled the topic yet? You might be able to receive a number of suggestions that way. But, my first choice would be to present the idea to the adviser and see what he or she says about it. Also, we can assist you as you continue with your progress -- here on the forum.
