thanks in advance!!

I began my undergraduate career at ...., India with the vision of becoming a pharmacist but my aspirations were soon redirected towards pursuing basic science. I was completely fascinated by the whole range of research opportunities United States could provide. Hence, in the fall of 2006, I came to New York to embark upon my much awaited research career at ..., NY. My first year in graduate school involved completion of course work along with intense reading of journal articles and reviews. At that point I had become familiar with the projects performed in various laboratories and decided to purse my Master's thesis under the guidance of Dr..., one of the most eminent researchers in the field of opioids. My project focused on understanding how opioid analgesic efficacy and dosing contribute to the development of tolerance through regulation of ΔΎ-opioid receptor. As is often the case in scientific research we encountered surprises, challenges and problems in the project that at times seemed almost insurmountable. My persistence and diligence paid off in the end leading to several publications in peer reviewed journals. Additionally, I drew from my experience in the lab to teach undergraduates in my institution the basics of molecular biology techniques. This enhanced my own knowledge of the field and solidified my interest in academics.

Graduate school provided me the tools to explore new avenues, as I joined the laboratory of Dr ...as a research assistant soon after the completion of my studies. The group focuses on elucidating how nutrients and hormones are sensed by the hypothalamus and how the brain controls energy homeostasis. The aim of my project is to understand the role of brain insulin signaling as a regulator of innate immunity. Initial months involved learning complex metabolic techniques and fine surgical procedures. We are currently in the process of writing the manuscript about our initial findings on the anti-inflammatory effects of brain insulin in mouse model of sepsis. I have moved beyond just learning techniques to actually determining future directions for my paper. My familiarity within the field of Endocrinology has just begun to mature, along with sound flow of pragmatic ideas for my current project and beyond.

Looking back, I am completely amazed at how transforming the graduate school and work experience has been. The last three years of scientific pursuit have not only solidified my interest in research but has also given me a diverse and multicultural background necessary to be a good team player and work autonomously as well. Now that I have firmly established myself as a competent researcher, my next endeavor will be to gain more concrete experience in a PhD program using the excellent facilities available at your department.

After two very enriching and fulfilling experiences in the research arena, I feel confident and well prepared for new academic and research challenges. I believe that I can hone the skills I have developed to laboratory in any field. My career goal is to contribute towards the understanding and curing of many diseases through engaging in translational research. To accomplish my goal, I am eager to familiarize myself with a wide range of basic cell biology and biochemistry techniques offered through your interdisciplinary training program. (I seek a research program that will challenge me and nurture my enthusiasm and outgoing personality.)/ I will bring to the program enthusiasm, diligence and most of all, my endless curiosity.
