Essays / Having a huge problem with coming up with chapters, commercial photography essay [4]

Hi, I'm studying a degree in commercial photography and academic essay aren't something I've done before. To prepare myself for the dissertation, we have to write a 3000 word essay (300 word intro, 300 word conclusion) with 2 chapters and 4 paragraphs in each.

I'm fairly confident with writing, but I'm having a lot of trouble coming up with what to write about - the question is "Is the advancement of micro-technology a threat to the commercial photographer". The gist of it is that mobile phone cameras are getting pretty good now and paid photographers may not be needed as much as a result if anyone can take great photos with little effort.

There is probably a simple rule to this that I just don't know, but how would I structure the main body of this essay - right now I have one chapter labelled "The Digital Revolution" and another called "The Commercial Photographer" but I don't think I can answer the question with those at all..

I am allowed to change the question if I find it easier to research something else.

Thanks in advance for any help

Undergraduate / Archery develops me both morally and spiritually; Common app - Extra curriculars [3]

There are several problems with this, first off I think you need to work on your grammar a little..

"It was the last distance (30 m) to end tournament, the energy..."

Another way you could write this, would be as follows:

"At the final stretch of the tournament, a staggering 30m distance, I felt my energy to be completely drained. While I placed first in the previous distances, the exertion from this sport caused me to feel debilitated and unable to keep up; scoring fairly low in the first two rounds."

Using more adjectives and powerful vocabulary, you are able to better express yourself and give your reader a sense of what you really feel.

"String struck my arm repeatedly, my bow hand ..."

There are several grammatical errors in this sentence, it should be more like this:

"The string repeatedly struck my arm. My bow hand shivered, and I missed an arrow. I then feared that I may lose the tournament."

Hope this helps.

Writing Feedback / CANADIANS SCHOLARS from a third level of education in Canada - the rising trend [2]

I can see some grammatical errors that need addressing.

"The graph illustrates an overview [...] a peak over the last five years. "

This could be improved as follows:

"The graph illustrates the number of graduates of a third level of education in Canada, over the last 15 years. The graduation rate of both sexes initially declined. However, from around 2001 onwards, the number of female students rose dramatically, reaching a peak in 2006."

Hope this helps.

Faq, Help / Why is my topic / thread deleted? [78]

Merged:Why was my topic deleted?

Hi, earlier I posted an essay - but it seems to have been deleted. I studied the topic rules for a while but I can't quite figure out what I did wrong?

Many thanks. Most likely you've published the essay elsewhere or copied it from elsewhere.

Faq, Help / Why is my topic / thread deleted? [78]

Hello,

I never published the essay elsewhere OR copied it. It contains a comprehensive bibliography.

I did have it on a PDF sharing site to make it easier to read, do I really need to have all of it in a single thread? Yes, you must post your essay if you want to have it reviewed/edited.

Essays / Art for Art's Sake: The Legacy of Surrealism in Contemporary Advertising Culture [3]

Art for Art's Sake - essay questions

Hello, I'm currently writing an essay entitled "Art for Art's Sake: The Legacy of Surrealism in Contemporary Advertising Culture". I am currently studying as a photographer that specialises in surrealist work, and I chose this subject to delve more into the cultural and social side of surrealism, while linking it to advertising and photography. I am, however, having a lot of trouble finding new chapters to write about.. I'm not good with structuring essays of this size (5000 words or so) and I'm not sure how to progress from here. Here's what my tutor told me to help:

"I'd the suggest the question is more one of why do we use and accept digital manipulation, and why does Surrealism have such a potent legacy in contemporary advertising culture. don't get hung up on the technology itself - that's just the process. Why it exists in the first place and the effect it has in our culture is far more interesting

There is a wealth of theory to mine here. You need to get chapter and verse on the history and philosophy of Surrealism. Then it's links with the visual language and semiotics of advertising. Once you're done with this realtively easy stuff - you need to acquaint yourself with Jean Baudrillard - and his writings on Simulacra, simulation and hyper-reality. "

My essay is currently structured as follows:

Introduction - 642 words

Surrealism in Culture (chapter)
- Legacy in Advertising, two paragraphs explaining how surrealism is used in advertising and why it's used.
- Romanticism and Realism, three paragraphs explaining the link between the romanticist and realist art forms, how it relates to surrealism, and how that links back into advertising.

- Simulacra and Visual Language, 400 or so words on what simulation/simulacra is and how it relates to surrealism and advertising.
- Contemporary Digital Manipulation - 3/4 of a page discussing why we use digital manipulation and how it was used before the advent of modern technology.

Where do I go from here? This is really stressful because this is needed for the course and I've hit a brick wall..

Thanks for any help
