Undergraduate / Personal User Manual: Introducing Yourself to Your Instructor [2]
My name is Vaidehi Patel. I am from India and I just moved here with my family this May. I am 16 and in the second semester of my sophomore year. Being 5-foot tall, people often joke about because I am too short. I certainly like to do art related activities like painting, sketching and another kind of hands-on activities. I am a very trustworthy and supportive person when it comes to my friends and family. Saying that, I also trust people much easily which often ends up getting me hurt. Since I trust people so easily, I open myself up to them which comes and bites me in the back. I have experienced this quite often, thus my goals for this year to stop trusting people so easily and only open up to certain people.
I used to live in a joint family. Being in a joint family I often received a great deal of affection, care and a love from all of my family members and they always support me whenever I feel low. However, I now live in a nuclear family. Being an elder child in the family, I try to be more responsible and a role model for my younger brother who is in elementary school. I am closer to my mom, so if I had to pick a favorite it would probably be her. This is because I, my mom and my brother lived in Canada for four years with my uncle while my dad lived in India, so I am not close to him.
I work best in quiet situations because it helps me focus more and grab more information from the passage. Although I normally don't need that much motivation, I do appreciate it when people do as it helps me boost my confidence and I end up doing a lot better. While doing my homework, often times I sit in my room alone and do it without any disturbances. Some people like listening to soft music while learning, but for me, I can't focus at all when even a slight tone of the music is playing in the background. Back at my old school, the teacher would make us read a passage together and then explain it thoroughly to the class, so I am used to this method of learning rather than reading the passage and understanding it individually.
One of my biggest flaw in my eyes is that I give up on things rather easily. If I figure that something is too difficult for me and I won't be able to go through with it, there always come a thought to just slack through it and get it over with. If I didn't have my friends and family's support then I would be doing this from time and again. Also, when it comes to doing major projects and assignments which are lengthy, I often start procrastinating and eventually forget about it till the due date. This is also because I am awfully lazy when it comes to writing long paragraphs and essays.
The way I usually deal with my flaw is I figure out a way to motivate myself. I either look at an inspirational quote or real my favorite novel. Whenever this doesn't work, I turn to my friends for help and cheer me up. I can always count on them to help me figure out a solution and at the same time motivate me by showing me all the positive rather than the negative things. Although when it comes to listening to advice, I don't always listen to just any friend or family member. The only people I listen to are my closest friends and family members who have been with me through every single step of my life. However, I'd like to change this about myself in order to prevent me being dependent on other constantly.
Since I just moved here, I don't have many experiences at the school. However, I really do admire the art program at this school. At my old school, we didn't have this kind of syllabus, it was quite different. Art and math have always been my favorite school subject since I was a child. On the other hand, history and English have always been my weakest point. English because my grammar and vocabulary are weak but I'd love to improve it this year in English 2 H. the one thing I'd say that I am afraid of in this class is the reading part. This is because if I don't have an interest towards the book I am reading then I won't be able to participate in the activities based on that book.
In my opinion, the most important thing in life is knowledge and one's strive for gaining that knowledge. Education is the most important part of life because, without it, you can't make the most out of your life. Without proper education, we would never know what is best for us in a particular situation. Family would come after education. Family and friends are important because they are always going to be there to support you and pull you up when you are feeling low. you can open up to them like you can with no stranger and they will always do what's best for you because they know your likes & dislikes, what's important to you and will always want to see you succeed in life.
