Graduate / Statement of Purpose- DIGITAL MEDIA/INTERACTIVE ARTS #draft-1 [2]

Hello, I'm applying for a Masters in Digital Media/Interactive Arts. Here's my Statement of Purpose.

my interest in the field of design

It was the 11th of November, 2012 when I discovered that I'd really gotten myself into some serious trouble. I was in a college, in a city where I didn't think I belonged because there was no creativity in what I was doing.

I'd given it some serious thought in the past few weeks, but now it was time. I packed my bags and headed back home..where I would have to explain exactly why a 9-5 job at a cubicle wasn't something I saw myself doing for the rest of my life. What I rather saw myself doing, was working as a creative individual, as someone who strived to make the world a little better than it was before.

Enter July 2013 and I'm now an arts student, studying at Srishti Institute of Art, Design & Technology in Bangalore, India. I'd entered as a Visual Communication student, but eventually found my work flowing to the fields of Product Design, Industrial Arts & Interactive Media. As I gained exposure to different fields of design, I started applying knowledge from one area to another: Used form and structure in visual language, and visual aesthetic in the products I'd make.

In my 2nd year of art school I had a course on Furniture Fixtures & Joineries, and we were expected to create a simple table/chair using the joineries that we'd learnt about. But I pushed myself a little further, and made an interactive wireless speaker (slightly larger than your average guitar) which could change it's colours based on the music that was playing. What really stood out to me was the aspect of communication between , the idea that if you give life to something, it can talk back to you. This project got me into the Autodesk Bootcamp, where I'd gone into the semi-final phase.

Eventually, that led me to get an internship at The Workshop, a cross-disciplinary design studio in Bangalore, India. There I had access to ideas, machines & idea machines. It was a great experience and also opened up the possibilities of AR. I started to delve into interactive spheres of communication and researching about the same.

My objectives for graduate studies are focused on advancing interfaces and interactions in an virtual sphere. To lay down a framework of research which moves me in a direction of understanding the limitations and capacities of these new technologies and to see how far they can be pushed. My experience with Augmented Reality so far has been minimal, but I'm sure this will influence my future pursuits and will provide the necessary foundation to create new technology that augments people's abilities.
