(minimum word count: 100 words, maximum word count: 500 words)
I was growing up watching my parents fighting and repeatedly almost going to divorce. These conditions never affected me to grow and achieve my optimal capacity as I was known as one of the best student in my school. Something inside me always says, it does not matter what your condition is, what does matter is your choice. To have a self-leadership is to influence yourself achieving your objectives. For me, a self-leadership is foundation of being a good leader.
I realised that my self-leadership personality has also led me to one of big decisions I have made in my carrier. In September 2017, I applied for internal transferred from oil and gas to financial services industry. Based on my calculation, staying in my current department may not lead me to Managerial position due to lack of exposures. At that time, financial services department need more people subsequent to their winning of three big audit projects. I saw that as an opportunity so decided to take it although it was outside my comfort zone.
After being transferred, I was assigned to be one of senior in charge in a new audit client which of one of top ten banks in Indonesia. I was in charge for a loan/lending area, which is one of the significant risk area for bank. To get me up to speed, I was coached by my junior. I felt it was really hard because it supposed to be me who did that. But, I took it as a learning process. It was obvious that they also seem underestimated me consider they were more experience than me on this area even it was more obvious with my manager. There was no time for contemplating, to win them over, I started pulling up my shocks by studying and reading many references such as the audit guide, accounting standard and audit documentation of other previous year jobs. I actively shared my stand point to show that I am conceptually and technically strong despite of my limited knowledge regarding banking industry. I then earned the trust from my team, able to coach them how to do sufficient and robust review, understand client's working paper, do documentation and draw a conclusion up to the issuance of the audited financial statements.
In June 2018, I was promoted to be an Assistant Manager. My director said on my feedback, "She is a fast learner and she also has willingness to learn about banking industry. She can take initiative to do self-learning although she is new in financial services industry, she can coach her associates".
Through this experience, I demonstrated strategies to build my mental, emotional and physical resilience. This experience also showed me that leadership is about leading yourself and others to achieve the shared objectives. An effective leadership is leading by example and giving real action. I believe being a Chevening Awardee will help me to broaden and sharpen my leadership skill and bring more impact to my country.
