The bar chart gives information about the percentage of the uneducated population, divided by region and by gender for the last year.
Overall, while South Asia reached the highest rate of illiteracy, the figure for developed countries saw the lowest proportion in both genders, close to zero. However, in every regions, there were more illiterate women than men.
South Asia got nearly 60% of the illiteracy rate in female while the state of not being able to read or write in male was just more than 30%, under 40%. And the second highest rate in unschooled population of male and female was Arab States with 52% and 28% respectively, the third one was Sub-Saharan Africa, 48% in female and 31% in male.
The number of illiterate citizens in East Asia/Oceania, Latin American/Caribbean and developed countries were much lower in comparison with other regions which was mentioned in the chart. In East Asia, 20% of female citizen not being able to study while there was only 8% in male counterpart. In Latin American/Caribbean, the amount of illiterate male was slightly higher than in East Asia/Oceania while the figure for illiterate female was lower. In addition, developed countries got the lowest rate at all (very near to zero percent).
