Undergraduate / "The art of observing." SCAD Statement of Purpose [NEW]
The statement should be of no more than 500 words and should give an overview of the applicant's academic and personal experience, describing preparation for and commitment to further study at SCAD, as well as educational and professional goals and aspirations.
------
My interest in art was cultivated by my quiet childhood, during which I learned to observe and appreciate the nuances of the world through silence. This innate trait, common in artists, fueled my fascination with the history of art and the intricate techniques that go into creating. As a result, I am passionate about pursuing a SCAD major in Art History and a minor in Ceramic Arts.
Being raised in the Hamptons and residing in one of the smaller, historically preserved towns constantly exposed me to historical art structures. Preserving historical buildings from the early years of Long Island draws art appreciators to the area, as buildings once used as cottages and boating homes are now standard establishments like restaurants and libraries. I felt intrigued that this town is essentially a large exhibit filled with artwork harboring impactful culture and meaning. Entering my high school career, my sculpture classes guided me to research artists' methods, indulging in the backstory of their work and how it dives into the culture from years before them. Involving myself in a job position at a local art museum, Guild Hall, as a part of their Teen Arts Council broadened my view on artists' responsibilities in museums. This job solidified my passion for pursuing art history due to a collaborative project with a local Art Advisor who started on the same path I strive to be. Being tasked to catalog 2 years' worth of selected artworks from 15 schools into three galleries, in tune with the respective theme of the exhibit, on display for the public.
During my visit to the Savannah campus, I observed a strong culture of valuing students' work. The school showcases its creations in exhibits staffed by currently enrolled students, providing the staff with vital professional experience in their studies and a way to earn money to put in for their supplies. My admission to SCAD would grant me the pathway to further mature my skills in the arts of Ceramics and pursue my admiration for Art History. I aspire to utilize this education and experience to pursue a career in preserving and showcasing art.
