Undergraduate / uc prompt:i am proud of Being Tri lingual [4]
With globalization, English has become the universally spoken language. Therefore, I strongly believed that it would be to my advantage to learn as many languages as I could to achieve the status of a global citizen. For that reason, becoming fluent in three languages (Turkish, English, and Spanish), is a personal achievement which I am very proud of. I am proud of this achievement, because it did not come easy for me. I was obliged to work hard, as well as take time away from other preferred social activities. During this process I learned that the more I know about different languages, the more culturally competent I have become. As a result of these efforts I now have more of a global perspective on political, economic, as well as social situations. I am also able to communicate more effectively with people of various different countries and cultures because of my exploration of foreign language in depth. I am able to learn countries' values from the lack of certain word knowledge. I have traveled to eight countries and was exposed to different cultures. Though I did not speak each native language, I was still able to communicate with the natives of the country because of my understanding of many cultures, which starts by knowing different languages. I have put my knowledge of these three languages into good use. I have translated for people who have visited the United States and people who have visited Turkey. I translated everything from Turkish to English and vice versa. In fact, I have translated from Spanish to English to Turkish. Doing this required me to be familiar and aware of the cultural differences and customs. I have the great privilege to connect with others which improves my communication skills and helps me become more socially active. Translating also helps me develop intellectually. The more I let myself learn about languages the more I will understand about cultures and people.
