Undergraduate / Remodeling A Bathroom and My Life: UC Prompt #1 [3]

Prompt: Describe the world you come from - for example, your family, community or school - and tell us how your world has shaped your dreams and aspirations.

Even as I was young, I always had the impression that hard work should be dreadful. I was daunted by anything that required me to exert effort, such as remodeling a bathroom. The project was labor-intensive and doing a good job would take more than a few days, perhaps weeks. I had no motivation to face this intimidating task. Little did I know that this experience would reconstruct my outlook on life.

It was not until I began the actual project that my perception of hard work began to evoke a positive feeling. As I struggled to tear down the tiles of the bathroom, my dad would often scold my poor performance. He would lecture me for not being able to use the tools correctly, or for thinking incorrectly. However, that didn't break me; I had to adapt to the situation. I was not used to operating heavy tools. I had to learn how to use these heavy tools, so that I could progress. I never figured that work could be so difficult. However, I believed it was time for me to engage myself in the project; When I encountered a problem, I learned to resolve the issue by making observations of how my dad resolved the same issue.

Most of these issues I experienced forced me to think cautiously on the spot. Even simple tasks, such as using a knife to cut sheetrock required intense precision. I had to measure out the proper lengths, make a clean and straight cut across the sheetrock, and secure it to the wood. I was fascinated by the laborious task, because I realized that life was the same. I had to reconstruct who I was by being able to find a way to be secure and endure anything life would challenge me with, while still being comfortable with my position in life.

Slowly, I decided that my project was not going to pass by meeting the minimal standards. If I was going to remodel the bathroom, I was going to need some more help. I asked my friends for ideas on designs. In the end, I had come up with a mixture of what everyone suggested, because I valued any help that I could get. I had marble walls in the shower, white tiles on the floor, and a toilet with a bookshelf situated above it. It was difficult, yet satisfying to complete.

Afterwards I walked into the completed bathroom, mentally and physically, I was satisfied with all the challenges I had overcome. With the completion of the bathroom, I breathed a sigh of relief, grasping my sense for accomplishment. Though the project presented me with many confusing and difficult scenarios, every hard step was enjoyable and rewarding.

I'm not necessarily concerned about the content, rather if I properly answer the prompt or not, but comments are greatly appreciated.
Thank you for your time.
