Writing a College Application Essay -- First person or Third person?

I've already applied for my colleges and am about to start writing the required essay. However, I'm at a loss for words. I'm so used to writing in third person, but this essay is supposed to be personal. Is it acceptable, or even encouraged, to be written in first person?

I love it! I, too, am writing my Florida State application but haven't gotten nearly as far as you. The only thing I could say is that your tenses seem to switch back and forth. I don't know if it's intentional or not, just an observation. You're an amazing writer!
