Graduate / (background in nursing) comments for Biochemistry MS Program SoP [2]

This is my Statement of Purpose for applying Biochemistry MS Program. Thanks for giving me any comments!

As a Registered Nurse, I am familiar with human body function and biochemical reaction. I graduated as bachelor in science of nursing in June, 2008. Ever since my days in college at National Yang-Ming University in Taiwan, I have been interested in Biochemistry. I am eager to extend my knowledge of theoretical and practical biochemistry in this program so that I will be employed by biotechnology industries and participate in research and develop cancer treatment medications.

My background in nursing has introduced me some of the Chemistry/ Biochemistry knowledge on structures, functions, and compositions of living things and matter. The training in nursing has allowed me gain critical thinking, organization, and prioritization skills. I gain broad understanding of medical field while I practicing in hospitals.

The years spent pursuing my undergraduate studies were the most pivotal period of my life. The rigorous curriculum exposed me to some subjects, including Organic Chemistry, Biochemistry, Pharmacology, Microbiology and Immunology, Physiology and Pathology. I was fortunately had an opportunity to learn with biochemistry professor Kou-Juey Wu. His research in HIF-1 and TWIST roles in the tumorigenesis of lung cancer and head and neck cancer inspire me a lot. It is my desire to obtain further studies in mechanism of metastatic cancer and interrupt this process.

In June 2008, I graduated from college. I had worked in Taipei Veterans General Hospital as an RN in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgical unit for one year. It was a great opportunity that I got to know a drug for head and neck cancer, cetuximab. This is a monoclonal antibody that has been designed to bind and block structures that are often present on cancer cells. As a nurse, not only administer to patients this drug, but also possess the knowledge of mechanism of drugs. In the future, I urge to participate in the pharmaceutical or biochemical research to develop efficient cancer drugs, and help much more patients.

In August 2009, I immigrated to United State. During these years, I promoted my ability in English and prepared for my RN license exam. Now, I am volunteering in a laboratory in SFSU. I have experience in cleaning utensils by blenching, preparing media, cultured bacteria, and sterile technique.

My career goal is to join a dedicated research team in a biotechnology industry that can help me reach my dream of helping more patients who suffer from cancer. I applied to California State University East Bay because of your excellent faculty, a reputation for close student-professor interaction, impressive research facilities and rigorous curriculum. I hope your admissions committee will look favorably on my application. Overall, I feel that your biochemistry MS program can help me achieve my goals by enriching my knowledge and laboratory experience.
