Undergraduate / "I heard the term Psychology" - Research Assistant Application [2]
Ever since I heard the term Psychology in middle school, I have been fascinated to learn about the complex and even mysterious human behaviors and mental processes. But I am especially attracted to clinical Psychology as one can directly communicate with the patient and hopefully observe the progress. While taking Abnormal Psychology with Professor Mohlman, I learned that there are different approaches to treat a patient but also a great number of individual cases still remain untreatable due to unknown causes and other biases. When the class lecture was on the topic of anxiety and mood disorders, I was surprised to know the different ratios between two genders and various races and age groups, wondering why some people are so vulnerable to these disorders. In terms of treatment, I am more towards to cognitive and behavioral therapy since they are so effective in such a short period. I am passionate to know more about learning how Psychology actually benefits people in the real world, and I believe the more I gain research experiences, the more I will be able to gain much insight in each patient's unique case. Because of my interest in clinical Psychology, I plan to attend a graduate school after finishing my undergraduate study at Rutgers in order to further my education and pursue a research career relating clinical Psychology, exploring the areas that are still unknown to Psychologists. I also have great passion in Mathematics, so I am planning to either major or minor in Statistics.
As a freshman who has just began to study Psychology, I would like to broaden my horizon in the field of Psychology by actually involving with the patients-- in this case the depressed youth-- and gaining the real research experience. Although I have not gained any research experience yet, I have completed the Occupational Health form, and attended New Jersey Right-To-Know Laboratory Safety seminar and a rodent training. Thus, I have gained an insight on how to handle animals in a research. The part about this research that I find most appealing is the fact that I will be exposed to all kinds of different illusion arts and study the brain. Because my hobby is crafting or anything that I can make with my hands, I feel this will be a fun research as I participate in making illusion arts and observe how humans' brain perceive and recognize the illusion. I also hope to gain various researching skills such as collecting and analyzing the data results, and even perhaps learn how to design experiments and build teamwork while working with other research assistants.
** The first few sentences from the second paragraph is irrelevant to the whole essay but could you please still check if they are grammatically okay?
thank you so much!
