Essays / Common app personal essay: selecting a topic for significant experience [8]

Hello,

Im having trouble selecting a topic for my personal essay. Im most likely going to go with the evaluating the significant experience and its impact on you question.

but im lost with what to right about. one idea is to write about my brother's leaving to study abroad, whose impact on me was huge since we were very close, or when i had to talk in front of 200 people and how it made me more confident.

which do you think is less traditional and more interesting to the admission officers. my friends cant help me decide.

I just wanted to know if you could give me guidelines for what i need to include in the "please elaborate on one of your activities (extracurricular, personal activities, or work experience)(150 words or fewer)" short answer that is part of the writing section on the common app?

Should it be merely descriptive? I would appreciate a guideline for what i need to include, and what kind of activity should i elaborate on - volunteer or an activity that demonstrates my entrepreneurship?

for the brown supplement essay, the question about 'what is an academic experience, project, class, or book that has inspired or influenced you?' should i use me first prominent history-related moment or should i talk about 'to kill a mockingbird'?
