Undergraduate / 'TelePortal' - If you could invent something - GaTech Essay [2]
3. If you could invent something, what would it be, and why?
It's new! It's amazing! It's revolutionary! It almost defies the laws of physics! It's the TelePortalŠ! I would definitely invent this!
With this invention, there is no need for petty cars and other transportation units. Say goodbye to that 1971 Camaro; say hello to the 2051 Senza TelePortalŠ! The TelePortalŠ is an invention in creation, drafted by Edward Zhu and his company, Senza. It propels matter at a speed almost as fast as light through a secured tunnel. This tunnel is ever-looping and can connect from your TelePortalŠ to any other TelePortalŠ in the world.
This portal will bring a new era of humanity, as we all ignore the differences that separated us and begin to relish the newfound company of anyone we could choose in the world. We can for once see eye to eye with our enemies. Instead of throwing bombs and missiles, we can throw joyful banter and debate to solve our problems. Long throughout history, the lack of instant transportation has plagued humanity. In the Battle of New Orleans in 1814, thousands of honest lives were lost, when news of the treaty was still arriving. Even with our current instant information network, it would still be a huge plus if we could stare into the eye of our "opponent" and negotiate a friendship.
It also addresses an overwhelming majority of worldly problems. Why are some communities so impoverished while others have resources in abundance? The lack of transportation of the goods needed by those communities is the obvious answer. Now we will be able to supply anyone with anything. Victims of a foreseen earthquake in Japan shall no longer fear. We can supply them with food, clean water, and even delicacies only found in the Western Hemisphere. There is an unsuspected problem with the nuclear reactor? That's fine; we have trained nuclear engineers stepping through the portal now to mend your woes. What will happen if I have no sour cream to put on my taco? I guess I will power up my TelePortalŠ and head to Cost-Co. Never again shall any human go without food, water, delicacy, or other resources.
Plus, no longer will our Earth be plagued by the energy crisis. Gas can now be used for more important things like powering generators that produce clean energy. Because of the lower demand, gas prices would also drop through the floor to a miniscule one dollar per gallon. Both environmentalists and their opponents will rejoice, again solving the differences between opposing groups. Even those pesky eco-terrorists and right-wing anti-environmentalists will have to revel in the brilliance of the TelePortalŠ.
Finally, in answer to the general public's questions, yes, the TelePortalŠ can be used for social activities. Say you have a girlfriend that goes to the University of Georgia, and you are currently attending The Georgia Institute of Technology. That's a distance of seventy miles! If you were using a car for a social gathering with your girlfriend, it would take over an hour. Using the TelePortalŠ, it might take ten seconds, depending on traffic. You could spend a nice lunch at Athens and be back before your Calculus class starts.
This TelePortalŠ will revolutionize the world. Without it we have been blind from the endless opportunities given to us. With it we shall usher in a new age of civilization. All it takes from you is a couple trillion dollars in funding.
