Undergraduate / 'Coming from Peru' - Upenn Suplement [2]
I am applying ED so this essay is due in about two weeks. Feedback would be appreciated. Thank you
Required for all applicants: Considering both the specific undergraduate school to which you are applying and the unique aspects of the University of Pennsylvania, what do you hope to learn from and contribute to the Penn community? (Please answer in one page, approximately 500 words.)
"What do you want to be when you grow up Jorgito?" asked my grandmother last December during her visit from Peru. "I want to start my own business" I answered; it was the same answer my father gave her when he was my age. My grandmother smiled yet began crying immediately. She lamented my father's inopportune passing away which had ended his success prematurely; however, her tears also expressed joy, as she realized that my father had instilled in me the value of perseverance and lofty dreams. I realized that my dreams require the strongest foundation possible, which led me to search for a school that seeks innovative, diligent, global-minded people and efficiently prepares them for the changing world we live in. The Huntsman Program and the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School of Business will not only provide the strongest foundation for my dream to start a transnational business but will allow me to develop into a global-oriented leader who is prepared to make the choices needed to improve society in the 21st century.
The corporate atmosphere of Philadelphia and the plethora of opportunities offered by Wharton create leaders who are destined to impact more than just the financial world. As Soccer team captain, Extreme Sports Club Founder, and Sports Editor for the yearbook, I seek an institution that will allow me to mature as a leader. Wharton is perfect for this task as it will instill in me the leadership necessary to start my own business and leave a legacy in this world. My perspective on learning coincides with Benjamin Franklin's notion of true learning, as I believe that applying one's knowledge to achieve progress in society constitutes the most rewarding aspect of learning. Wharton's MGMT 100 as well as ABCS courses represent ideal learning for me, as I would have the opportunity to develop leadership, teamwork, and communication skills while simultaneously helping my community.
Penn's unique PIK initiative and flexibility to follow various areas of study simultaneously is the most enticing factor for me as it would allow me to view the world from different perspectives. A B.S. in Economics with a dual concentration in Entrepreneurship & innovation and Finance would build a strong entrepreneurial foundation for the future. However, in order to achieve a better understanding of the cultural, political, and psychological factors behind international economic interaction I would complement my education with a degree in international studies, and a minor in consumer psychology.
The Huntsman Program appears to have been designed just for me as it incorporates my fascination with traveling and exploring cultures around the world, my ability to learn a language incredibly fast, and my desire to become an international entrepreneur. In addition to Penn's culturally diverse campus and global partnerships, The Huntsman Program and Wharton will prepare me to form part of the new generation of entrepreneurs who understand the various areas outside of business that impact the increasingly globalized economy of today.
Tutoring children of low income families exposed me to the rewarding experience of helping one's community and makes it crucial for me to form part of an institution devoted to not only the advancement of its students, but society as a whole. Penn's partnership with the Netter Center exemplifies Penn's admirable altruistic mission and coincides with my personal goals to continue helping my community and making a difference on other people's lives.
Coming from Peru I never imagined I could potentially attend such a prestigious university like Penn; however, I have learned that with a desire to learn and diligence even the most seemingly unattainable goals can be accomplished. Penn's mission extends beyond academics, as it creates a stimulating community in which classmates from a myriad of backgrounds can learn and inspire one another simultaneously. It is my dream to form part of Penn's community and perpetuate Benjamin Franklin's legacy of making the world a better place
