Undergraduate / 'great tolerance for aloneness' - PS for US common application [NEW]
Tell us about a personal quality, talent, accomplishment, contribution or experience that is important to you. What about this quality or accomplishment makes you proud and how does it relate to the person you are?
From my observation, the most special quality that distinguishes me from other people is that I have such a great tolerance for aloneness. I must say I am more than proud of this quality, eventhough sometimes people misunderstand it and think I am just being too shy since I am not a social person. I understand but I am not shy at all. Sometimes I make friends with strangers fair easily. My classmates and old friends don't think I am introvert either, actually they think the opposite is true.
I am alone but never lonely. Everyday I spend two to three hours in the library studying alone and I have kept this habit ever since I arrived here. From my observation, most people go to library or study center only when the exam is coming and they tend to study in group. Sadly sometimes group studying ends up becoming group chatting. Back in highschool I have already realized that this quality of mine makes me an good learner. Not only that I have more time to study(because I don't spend a lot of time hanging out with friends), but I also study more effeciently because I am focused on the subject I am studying.
This quality is even more important to me after I arrived here, a foreign country. I have met a lot of international students from all over the world. Though they are different in many aspects, they do share one thing in common, that is everything they do, they want to drag someone with them. However, I never do that. I solo in most of the classes I take and the clubs I join, and I am totally fine with it. What is more, I believe sometimes in order to achieve a goal, to make a difference, we have to be alone. This is the price we have to pay. It's even more true if we are the only beneficiaries of our own dreams. To be independent is very important for me because that makes me a complete and self-governed person. Being a scientist, which is what I intend to be, tolerance for aloneness is even more important. At most of the time, when a genius scientist came up with a whole new idea or hypothesis which can bring a revolution, what is waitting for him are not applauses or flowers but suspicions and even mockeries. He had to find a way to test his findings, walked down this dark lonely road on his own. But at the end of the road is the moment of truth, is "when the veil over nature's secret seems suddenly to lift and when what was dark and chaotic appears in a clear and beautiful light and pattern."This quality of mine prepares myself for the coming of that magical moment and makes me an independent, complete individual.
