Book Reports / Research paper on The Great Gatsby (scenes of weddings, funerals, parties, and other) [5]

I need to edit my Great Gatsby essay and turn into a research paper but i am completely lost. The prompt is Novel and plays often include scenes of weddings, funerals, parties, and other social occasions. Such scenes may reveal the values of the characters and the society in which they live. Select a novel or play that includes such a scene and, in a focused essay, discuss the contribution the scene makes to the meaning of the work as a whole. My idea is that Fitzgerald uses party scenes to reveal that a clean background, a good reputation and lavish life is what is most important to the main characters. I have my quotes and articles already chosen but i don't know how to incorporate them to my essay.

Book Reports / Research paper on The Great Gatsby (scenes of weddings, funerals, parties, and other) [5]

This is my essay:

Many dream to have extravagant life style and to keep their past lock up and away from the eyes of the public. In Fitzgerald's avant-garde work, The Great Gatsby reveals the Roaring Twenties a time were the world was coming back to normalcy after World War I. Time period were woman redefined themselves, jazz blossomed, and mob illegal operations increased. James Gatz is driven by love to transcend and become Jay Gatsby in order to win the affection of Daisy Buchanan. Gatsby's over the top parties attracted great amount of rich and pompous people that came without invitation and rarely talk or thank the host. Fitzgerald use of party scenes helps reveal that a clean background, a good reputation and a lavish life is most valuable to people in order for them to retain their social status in society .

Gatsby's extravagant parties went on during "summer nights" and people were rarely invited, but "they went there" to celebrate in a sumptuous atmosphere. As Nick gets to know better Jordan Baker; his curiosity about Gatsby's wins and he asks her about his past, but she adamantly avoided the question and start talking about how she "like large parties" due to their "[intimacy]." On the night of his acquaintance with Gatsby, Nick turns quickly to Jordan and interrogates her about his "dim background." Nick's actions seem child-like and very chagrined due to his choice of action; it seems that the only way Nick could get information about Gatsby is by gossiping like small school girls. It's pitiful to watch Nick's jejune attempts to get information about the host of "large parties" is by chattering with uninvited guest that only seek the "privacy" that small parties doesn't provide. Gatsby's "dim background" is surely secure by the intimacy of the large party in which no one will find out about his impecunious life style due to everyone engrossment in their own affairs. Gatsby's past is well hidden from the eyes of everyone who attends his parties or stays at his house in order to keep feigning coming from a good family and to attract his lover Daisy with pompous parties.

As Jordan takes over and narrates for Nick, she remembers that Daisy was "popular" and used to party with the "young, rich, and wild" but never actually came out with a bad reputation. It's absurd for Daisy to be married and have a baby girl but still spend most of her time partying with the social elite of Chicago. This action clearly expresses Fitzgerald's disdain towards Daisy's fractious attitude towards her responsibilities. Daisy attending elite parties in Chicago and not in West Egg( Gatsby and Nick's part of town) shows that she only wants to keep her "perfect reputation" intact and doesn't want to attend a "Trimalchio['s]" (Vulgar free man that gives parties for noble guest.) party. She is very cautious of how she acts and says in public because "she doesn't drink" and has total control of her mind without any alcoholic substance intoxicating her. Daisy goes out in public to fulfill her role in society of great rich women with a good life. She chooses purposely to party with "wild" friends to keep her façade of being an innocent, well behave wife compare to her friends' unruly behavior.

Gatsby's luxurious parties are just to enjoy for the moment and not get involved with, just like Gatsby. Every Friday "5 crates" of fruit (oranges and lemons) came from "New York City" to make the alcohol beverages lavish for the guest and the very next Monday there was a "pyramid of pulp-less halves" at his backdoor. The use of fruit to enhance the flavor of moonshine, suggests that Gatsby is being use by society due to his wealth and his immoderate spending budget. It is pathetic to see that the only way Gatsby can get friends and Daisy's company is by becoming a "Trimalchio" and investing most of his money and time on pleasing, impressing his ungrateful guest. It seems that Gatsby throws over the top get together in other to show off his inheritance and the life he acquire thanks to Dan Corey.

Thru the use of party scenes the author portrays that the main concerns of the book characters are having a luxurious life, a good last name, and an intact reputation during the Roaring Twenties. The parties at Gatsby's house propose that he is insecure about his social standing even though he has obtain a large sum of money that "brought him [large amounts of] food" to share with his guest during these lavish parties. In allowing his guest to take advantage of his resources makes Gatsby seems like fool. The opinion of society makes the main characters seem materialistic and pompous about what they have and could offer to others.

quotes that need to be incorporated:

"He [Nick] comes to admire a man, Gatsby, who brakes all of the rules." Fitzgerald makes Nick be fond of Gatsby due to his similar situation he experience by falling for a girl in a a higher social status than him. (McAdams, p. 113)

As Gatsby, Fitzgerald "...was troubled by... the unfairness of a culture marked by great divisions of wealth," (McAdams, p.115)

"the whole idea of Gatsby is the unfairness of a poor young man not being able to marry a girl with money. this theme comes up again and again because i lived it" (Stern, 1970, p. 164)

Scholarship / 'a forensic field, or something similar' - NSF - My Education and Career Goals [6]

My name is Sandra and I am currently a sophomore, attending both Laredo Community College and Texas A & M International University. I am pursuing a major in Biology with the intent of earning a Bachelor's of Arts in said area with a minor in Forensic science. My goal is to attain a career where I can give back to my community and perhaps express my passion in solving abstract problems and investigating the natural world. There are many ideas and adventures in which I eagerly await to pursue, all of which connect to my interest in biology and science.

For my college career, I decided to pursue a Bachelor's of Arts in Biology, as opposed to a Bachelor of Science; because as much as I enjoy learning biology, I have a keen interest in some areas like forensic science, English, mathematics and philosophy. A Bachelor's of Arts will surely help me gain the necessary knowledge to help me obtain a career in the scientific field, but still help me explore other areas that will surely( don't write "will surely" a lot) make me a more well-rounded individual.

As I continue to work on my Bachelor's in Biology, I plan to apply to internship programs that will give me hands on experience in the scientific field. One of the internship programs that I will be applying to will include the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) National Internship Program. Hopefully, getting into that program will provide me with the opportunity to gain experience in the federal government by allowing me to participate in Federal Sponsorships like the Central Intelligence Agency, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, or the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

After college, I would like to find a career as either a Laboratory technician in a forensic field, or something similar. Then, I would like to perhaps pursue a Master's Degree to get into an institute like the National Biocontainment Laboratory in Galveston, Texas. The knowledge and experience I gain from my college career shall benefit me in finding a profession that will stimulate my enthusiasm for investigating and researching the world around me.

Student Talk / What are my chances to get into the following schools? [16]

Wow i am a junior and just took my first real SAT at the beginning of the month and hope i get similar scores. In my opinion it doesn't matter how many AP classes you are taking it depends how good you are doing in them and also you may be part of many organizations but what counts its the quality time you spend on them. It looks like you are competitive for Ivy League schools and will be doing great in college with all the prep work from the AP classes. Lol and like you i suck at writing essays, did you take SAT prep-classes?

For your essays you should get your English teacher or any other teacher to edit them. My counselor always tells me that when I write my essays I should give my essay to someone I know and ask them if it sounds like me, then give it to a teacher that i don't know and at the end ask him or her what they learn about me. If they answer what you wanted , you did a good job... i don't know i make sense but you should try it. It has work for me in scholarship essays...

Book Reports / 'Witches or fates and unrealistic incident' - My Macbeth paper [NEW]

I need to edit my Macbeth research paper.. the prompt is Choose an implausible or strikingly unrealistic incident or character in a work of fiction or drama of recognized merit. Write an essay that explains how the incident or character is related to the more realistic of plausible elements in the rest of the work. I chose Shakespeare's play Macbeth and his encounter with the three witches.

Witches or fates are a popular superstition, women, who are possess by their familiars , they often determine the actions of humans without regarding their personalities. In Shakespeare's tragedy Macbeth, Macbeth is a successful warrior and Thane of Glamis in Scotland under the reign of King Duncan. On their way back from war to the castle of Duncan, Macbeth and his loyal friend Banquo are met by the weïrd sisters. During the meeting, the weïrd sisters prophecy Macbeth as Thane of Glamis, Thane of Cawdor and at last as King of Scotland. Shakespeare utilizes the unrealistic incident of the three witches to foreshadow Macbeth's future and where his hunger for power starts to demonstrate that by a simple possibility to better your position people are willing to risk who they are and what they have.

The weïrd sisters are planning to meet "with Macbeth" at the beginning of the play to foretell his new acquired title as "Thane of Cawdor," (Shakespeare i. i. 7) this prediction has Macbeth worked up since "The Thane of Cawdor lives." (Shakespeare i. iii. 21) and is impossible for him to be thane. He is perturbed by the prophecy of the witches until his noble friend Ross comes by and announces that the King has made him Thane of Glamis and Cawdor to thank him for his valor actions during war. The correct prediction of the three witches has Macbeth wondering what else the witches are right about, which leads to the start of Macbeth's "unbridled ambition" (Bradley, 40). It is pitiful to see Macbeth fall into the traps of the witches that only want him to fall to his doom. Macbeth is a loyal man to King Duncan who just bestowed him with another important title in Scotland, but the witches' veracity on the predictions have made Macbeth question his pledge of loyalty to Duncan. We could see that this is the first waver to Macbeth's moral standards.

During the meeting between Macbeth and the three witches, they act as prophets who predict "that [Macbeth] shalt be king...," (Shakespeare i. iii. 17) with the last prediction being true Macbeth has started to harvest the seed of ambition that the witches had planted with the last prophecy. In order for Macbeth to become king, King Duncan has to be killed and his successors vanished from Scotland. With this last prediction we could see that "...the witches are more clearly forces of pure evil..." (Lynch, 31-32) It is pitiful to see a successful, noble men fall into the trap of old witches that are "unable to ruin him directly, they must tease him into ruining himself." (Fergusson, 60) Macbeth is now in a predicament; he must choose whether to continue his loyalty towards Duncan or follow the witches' prophecy and betray everything he believes in. The witches are responsible for the things Macbeth does in the future due to their instigations.

Macbeth has become "...obsessed with the possibility of his becoming king..." (Shakespeare i. iii. 138) that he is willing to betray Duncan's trust and risk losing his title as Thane of Glamis and Cawdor. The witches are the ones to blame on Macbeth's murderers in the play because of the "half-truths... [they] tempt [him]." In Act IV, scene 1 the witches "[show] their bond with evil" thru the lasts "necromancy" (Fergusson. 60) prophecies that taunt Macbeth to ruin himself. This is the last scene in which the weïrd sisters appear and make Macbeth draw the last to straw to his doom. He will do whatever it takes to protect his "fruitless crown" (iii. i. 85) and it is willing to kill Macduff's innocent family for betraying him and leaving to England.

During the apparitions of the weïrd sisters we have learn that they manipulated Macbeth to his impending doom. They are the ones that have filled Macbeth with "half-truths" that caused him to betray his King and become a murderer of innocent people. Due to Macbeth's drive for power he has broken his entire moral senses and become a power hungry king that is always paranoid.
