Graduate / SOP MFA in Dramatic Media at the University of Georgia [2]

I have been out of school for a while and haven't written a paper in years, so I am a little rusty. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated! The MFA program I'm applying to incorporates computer animation and programming, film, and performance.

It was my high school theatre teacher that first told me "if you can live without theatre then you are not meant to live your life in theatre". It did not take me very long to understand what he was trying to convey. If you choose to dedicate your life to something, whether it is theatre or not, you must have an unyielding passion for it. I believe in what my teacher intended to instill in his students, however, I also believe that one's passion may expand and shift as they continue to grow and explore new ideas.

Performance art has been an integral part of my life from an early age. It wasn't until after high school that I began to explore the variations on performing art. While the stage provided me with much of my artistic foundation, I wanted to explore modern and unique forms of creative expression.

When I decided to attend The Evergreen State College I had a strong desire to delve into the world of digital media. Evergreen was exceptional at providing its students with encouragement for experimentation. If there was a concept or style I wanted to explore, my professors would provide me with the resources I needed in order to successfully pursue my interests. The projects I completed while at Evergreen, ranged from traditional film, interactive installation and animation. During this time it was important to me that I remained in a collaborative environment, an approach Evergreen also strongly encouraged and one I embraced whole heartedly. Some of my most memorable moments were team projects involving a concept or technique we had recently been introduced to and creating a piece utilizing those newly acquired skills.

Upon graduating, I moved to Seattle with my three closest friends from the Media program and we decided to found our own video production company. This was my first taste of the professional world in media production. Our business plan was to create promotional videos for Seattle based institutions and non-profits and use our profits to create our own art. It was during this time when I discovered the non-profit "Reel Grrls", a organization dedicated to educating young girls ages 9 to 19 in media literacy and production. During my two years spent in Seattle I was a volunteer mentor for many of the Reel Grrls programs. It was incredibly gratifying to be a part of a group that promoted youth empowerment in the digital arts. I quickly realized that educating young people in the realm of media art was something I wanted to continue to cultivate as I grew as an artist and media maker.

I want to pursue my graduate studies in The University of Georgia's Dramatic Media Program. What appeals to me most about this course are its diverse areas of study pertaining to media and the performing arts. The Dramatic Media program would not only introduce me to new techniques but it would also support me in my research and implementation of these techniques. I want the opportunity to hone my skills while discovering unique ways to apply them. I am particularly interested in exploring 3D computer animation and the relationship between new media and performance art. I am eager to cultivate myself as an artist while educating those around me and the Dramatic Media program at UGA will give me the support and opportunities to do so.
