Introduction
Coming of age signifies a growth in a person self, he or she will experience a pivotal moment that will shape their character and show a realization of what they really are. The two stories that illustrate both concepts are Greasy Lake by T. Coraghessan and Where Are You Going Where Have You Been by Joyce Carol Oates. Greasy lake represents three young men on road to maturity, along the way they make a number of mistakes and must suffer the consequences. On the other hand, the author Joyce Carol Oates demonstrates a young woman who's also on the road maturity but focuses on self-discovering. Her character represents a clueless innocent girl who lives in the present but has no sense of future consequences, which entails the storyline. In both stories, foreshadows and characterization were among the elements of fiction used by both authors to show that their action will catch up to them through consequences. In all things considered we can begin to depict a connection between these two short stories that in coming of age when discovering self-identify, one must go a revelatory experience or obstacles that shapes there future behavior.
