Scholarship / How the Internet or Internet technology has, is, and will help my studies? [2]
how the Internet or Internet technology (e.g. websites, blogs, forums, social media, etc.) has helped you during the course of your studies and how you envision benefitting from it through college and beyond?
Like any typical teenager of my generation, I spend several hours a day surfing the Internet. However, unlike most adolescents, I responsibly use my Internet time to further my studies and discover more about my interests. I credit most of my academic success to the Internet because it has facilitated me with access to valuable information. The Internet has primarily jump-started my life in the United States by allowing me to acquire such an important skill as being fluent in English is. Moreover, as I envision my college journey to unfold, I am certain that Internet and Internet technology will become large factors in my studies as a Computer Engineering student.
Unsure of the future ahead of us, my mother and I immigrated to the United States five years ago in order for me to receive a better education. Thus, I came determined to overcome any obstacles that could hinder my progress. Undoubtedly, school was extremely challenging for me at first because I could not speak English and the environment was foreign. Yet, I did not allow the change and shock to cause me to lose sight of my goal, which was to learn English first. Although I took ESL classes in school, I wanted to accelerate the usually long process by any means. Since I was experienced with computers and the Internet, I knew that they would be great tools for my English studies. Thus, I urged my mother to buy a computer as soon as economically possible. When I had a computer at hand, I promptly searched the Internet for English lessons and found several useful sites and blogs. With abundant Internet resources and books, I studied English on my own in the afternoons and over the Summer. After a year and a half living in the United States, I was capable of reading, writing and speaking in English.
Incidentally, I have discovered new interests while surfing the Internet. Two years ago, I encountered a video related to the South Korean culture. Watching this video on the Internet led me to research more about this fascinating culture and ever since I have been captivated by the beauty and depth of the culture. Learning so much about South Korea through the Internet has inspired me to learn Korean in hopes of visiting South Korea someday. With resources from the internet such as websites, blogs, and forums, I have been learning Korean on my own for the past year and now I can write and read in Hangul, the Korean alphabet.
The Internet has greatly helped me overcome challenges and become more knowledgeable of other cultures. And as a computer engineering incoming freshman in college, technology will be present in many aspects of my daily life. Thus, I am certain that the Internet and Internet technology will continue to be reliable tools for my career in this field and even outside of engineering because the world is becoming increasingly dependent in technological advances, which I hope to create subsequently.
Please help, criticism is gladly welcome. I want to make my essay as strong as possible.
