1. The graph below shows how money was spent on different forms of entertainment over a five- year period.
Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information show below.
The graph describes a considerable proportion of the United States entertainment expense on the global basis and clarifies the general trend of world entertainment markets over a five year period.
Firstly, the graph breaks down the global market into three smaller regions. United States became the leading consumer of entertainment services during 1995-2000, accounted for more than 51% the work market share. In fact, it spent around $180bn on entertainment in 1995, as three times as that of Asia and more 2 times than that of Europe. The global market generally expanded by around 40% over five years, in which, the Asia market, the smallest, enjoyed highest growth rate at nearly 65% followed by America with nearly 40% to $257bn, while Europe only inched up by 35%.
The graph also categorizes entertainment expenses, including Cinema, video, Music, Publishing, Television; to give more details of entertainment expense variation over the 5 years. Of which, driving factors of the market are Television and Publishing, which account more than 70% of overall consumption and have significant increase over the five year. Yet, three other categories, the minority, remained stagnant in this period.
To conclude, the growth of Publishing and Television mainly explains significant development of the work entertainment market from 1995 to 2000. In which, The United states stands for the largest consumer with more than a half of total market share.
Task 2:
Under British and Australian laws a jury in a criminal case has no access to information about the defendant's past criminal record. This protects the person who is being accused of the crime.
Some lawyers have suggested that this practice should be changed and that a jury should be given all the past facts before they reach their decision about the case.
Do you agree or disagree? Give reasons for your answer.
answer:
A court is to maintain the balance and make society's retribution, so the fairness of verdict given in the court strengthens the belief within law-biding citizen, deterring people from committing a social crime. However, to make a verdict isn't always easy for the Judge and jury because it is not only based on the extent of negative consequence of the crime but also the rationale behind it. To help a jury to make a right decision, he actually needs to have a fully extended grasp on the defendant's profile.
First of all, a jury couldn't fully understand the motive of action the offender made before without knowing his or her past criminal record. For example, a girl could become a prostitute or burglar because she had to drop her school, suffered from domestic violence or a mental crisis. In addition, the jury also has to investigate the previous illegal actions to give suitable punishment for the offender. A bank robber, for example, is charged in court again with the same conviction right after his release, must be sentenced by heavier punishment because he failed to rehabilitate and continued his misdeeds.
However, the jury needs to be careful about making a prejudiced decision based on the past criminal record. In some circumstance, the judge and jury can make a guilty verdict on innocent defendant, basing on their past crime rather than clear-up evidences or proof. It is a high probability that the latest robbery was carried out by the defendant who committed crime previously, but it is not always true. In fact, many people who was charged in court before has reformed to a beneficial person to society.
