Undergraduate / Since my early teens, I have had a fascination with understanding how certain things work - A&M [3]
Hi everyone, I'm submitting an application for the Engineering Technology Department at A&M basically trying to declare a major. I am in by 3rd semester of college and am in general studies. Here's the essay prompt attached to the application:
Please write an essay, 350 words or less, addressing your desire to change your major. Include information concerning why you are interested in the above-indicated program, and how you will benefit from becoming a student in the program (be specific).
I addressed the prompt as two questions:
1) Why am I interested in Mechanical Engineering Technology? I addressed this in my 1st and 2nd paragraph
2) How will I benefit from becoming a student in the Mechanical Engineering department? I addressed this in my 3rd paragraph
I tried to answer as honestly as possible and didn't want to fluff anything up. I'm thinking my first sentence is too generic sounding, but don't know how else to tie everything together without going over the word limit. Also, I have 377 words which is over the limit. Would it be reasonable to exceed the limit by that much?
Thanks!
The engineering technology program at Texas A&M offers the kind of classes and programs that fit my personality and my interests. Since my early teens, I have had a fascination with understanding how certain things work, how they are put together, and what can be done to improve them. This includes activities from my childhood such as tinkering with Legos to my later years of disassembling broken electronics and diagnosing and fixing issues with my vehicle.
My first year of college helped to solidify my roots in engineering as I took two engineering classes, each involving a small group project. One of these challenges was to model and animate a fully functioning combustion engine on a 3D CAD program. Our group picked the Mazda 13B rotary engine, an engine that had never been successfully modeled due to its oddly shaped epitrochoid housing and curved triangular shaped rotors. The project was completed with great results after well over 100 hours of dedicated work and research from each group member. Needless to say, I found the entire process not only captivating, but a learning experience of how the engineering process works. Because of this project I developed an understanding that engineering is not just a practice of applying mathematical and scientific knowledge, but a process involving strong leadership, organized group work, and dealing with the inevitable problems that arise.
Through experiences like this, I feel that the Engineering Technology School at A&M is the right choice for me and will keep me challenged and focused on learning new concepts and how they can be applied to real world scenarios. One thing that especially interests me is the hands on approach that the school takes through the many different labs that I was given access to tour. I like this idea because it would allow me to experience the types of tools and machinery engineers have to account for to turn designs into products and would provide a greater understanding of the theory behind how the equipment operates. The fact that this engineering department is so widely renowned for producing knowledgeable engineering technology graduates that have such a high rate of employment after graduation makes me feel confident that mechanical engineering technology at A&M is the right path for me.
