Graduate / I ALWAYS THOUGHT WHY SCIENTIST CAN'T DEVELOP BETTER VERSION OF PAIN KILLERS [3]

Name: Jeevan Sharma
Intended major: MS in Pharmacology
Semester: Fall 2013
Suffering from migraine, my mum in Nepal used to experience marginal pain relief, despite taking a couple of Crocin (Paracetamol). Seeing this, I always thought why scientists can't develop a better version of pain relieving medicines. Perhaps because of that since my tender age, I had compassion towards working in the Pharmaceutical research. Imagination of healthy world with development of safe and effective medicines has always been and will continue to inspire me to be a pharmaceutical researcher. Lately I understood that new drug discovery requires thriving academic base of pharmacology as pharmacologists are the ones who discover, design and test drugs. This concept enchanted me to select Pharmacolgy as the major.

To grasp a strong concept in basic sciences, I took Physics, chemistry and Biology and Mathematics as an elective in my 10 +2 education. My never resting journey in the field of Pharmaceutical sciences formally began when Indian Embassy of Nepal, from the pool of thousands of applicants, accepted me as an international scholar to Study Bachelor's in Pharmacy in India

I received my Bachelor's degree from JSS College of pharmacy - the premier college of pharmaceutical sciences in India. There I was exposed to the theoretical as well as the practical aspect of subjects like Organic and Inorganic Chemistry, Biostatistics, Anatomy and physiology, Biochemistry, Pharmacology, Pharmacognosy, Pharmacy Practice, Hospital Pharmacy, Forensic Pharmacy etc. Theoretical knowledge gained in the classroom and the skills, expertise and experience gained in the laboratory in a professional environment is my wealth that I accumulated from the college. With my strong interest and relentless persistence, I did very well in my academics. My performances, ever inclined up, in each successive academics level are true reflection of it.

Those four years were critical in molding me towards an enthusiastic pharmacist. I grabbed every opportunity to participate in seminars, workshops and conferences of National and International level. My first participation was in National seminar on "Trends in Pharmaceutical Sciences, Practice and Education". The Guest lecture of Dr. B. Suresh, IPA president of India made me aware about the rapid change in R&D process of bringing drugs from discovery laboratories to the marketplace. The emerging role of development scientist as influenced by new technology to make important conceptual advances in the field of pharmacology was discussed in the seminar that made enchanting impacts on my mind. In addition to the above seminar, my participation in international level includes "International Seminar on Herbal Drug Research: Present and Future Prospects" and participation as a delegate in "Indo European symposium on alternative approaches to animal testing"

My passion and determination to dedicate myself in pharmaceutical research further motivated me to work under various projects and be trained in the pharmaceutical industry. To further my knowledge of pharmacology and to gain a firsthand experience at pharmaceutical industry, I have undergone industrial training at Strides Arcolab limited where I got exposed to Quality control (chemical), Quality Assurance, Product and F&E department of sterile Product Divison. Its state-of-the- art facility, stringent aseptic procedures, advanced testing and manufacturing equipment for the production of parenteral products was impressive. During the training, I got chance to interact with its eminent R&D scientist and had a discussion about the lead selection and optimization in the early stage of drug discovery. From the on-site experience and practical knowledge gained during training period, I delivered a lecture to my faculty members on the topic "parenteral preparations and its industrial production" and I was highly appreciated about my communication skills. As the effective communication of ideas is important aspect of any research career, I find this skill as one of my biggest strength.

As a B.Pharmacy project, I along with my team members surveyed the acrylamide contents of various food products using HPLC. During the Project, I demonstrated the spirit of teamwork, creativity in recording, arranging and interpreting data which is an essential trait of a researcher. My research and review paper are further proofs of it. I have published a review article entitled "Transdermal Drug Delivery system: an overview" in International journal of research in Pharmaceutical sciences, 2012 3(2), 1-8., I have Co-authored in presenting a poster entitled "Evaluation of the anti-ulcer activity of Terminalia chebula against peptic and duodenal ulcer in rats".

After receiving my undergraduate's degree, I joined xxx pharma limited as an Production executive and now in Product management team where I enhanced my knowledge of Pharmacology and pharmaceutics of targeted anti-cancer drugs like Geftinib, Erlotinib and Sorafenib. Thus after four years of undergraduate studies of Pharmaceutical sciences with excellent academics records and a year of Industrial experience along with credit of research and publication, I am prepared to join MS in Pharmacology leading to Ph.D.

I feel that ABC University with its comprehensive research facilities available at its international standards laboratories and its renowned faculty members doing research in the field of pharmaceutical sciences will be the ideal place for me to Pursue Graduate studies. Research interests of the faculty members in the field of Pharmacology and environmental toxicology convinced me that their Supervision will prepare me to be an outstanding researcher in Pharmacology. I view the master's degree as an intermediate step in achieving this goal. Hence, I would like to take up an M.S. culminating in a Ph.D. aimmediate goal.

I would like to reiterate that I possess the required background and the ability to make a significant contribution in the field of Pharmacology and to the university. I look forward to a long and symbiotic association with Pharmacology department of ABC university
