Iintroductory sentence for an English composition.

Often when asked about the extracurricular activities that I am a part of at school, the reactions that I receive from my peers when I mention the word, "math club" have been quite interesting.

This sentence to me, sounds a little awkward.
Is there another way to write this introductory sentence so it sounds catchy and attention-grabbing?
