My decision to return to school and earn a Diploma in Mathematics Teaching stems from my determination that I have specific needs that can best be met within the limits of a graduate mathematics teaching curriculum. I seek more educational pedagogies, exposure to teaching practices and evaluation outcomes in order to advance my career as a subject head not only for primary level but also in secondary in the field of education.
After obtaining a bachelor's degree in elementary education in 1998, I was directly engaged into teaching field. I have taught in private schools for 3 years and 5 years in public school. I was aiming for a higher post in government school; nevertheless I decided to expand my teaching experiences. In 2006, I applied overseas, able to pass all the requirements and teach.
It is my love and affinity for numbers that incited my career in Education and has motivated me to further pursue a distance education in XXXX. This will also give me the chance to be a well-recognized individual among peers and colleagues within my profession.
In my present job, I serve as a Subject Head - Mathematics in Primary Department. I am responsible for the efficient running, development and performance of the department, supporting all members of the department in their responsibilities, and directing, as appropriate, the work of those colleagues to ensure successful and effective teaching and learning. While in this position, I have become known for maintaining clear vision, purpose and high expectations, focused on students' achievement. In 2011, I have had the pleasure of working with teachers in 3 campuses to discuss about assessment and test construction in mathematics by spearheading a sharing session workshop.
Problem solving is a terrifying experience, incomparable by anything else. It would be greatly rewarding for me to be able to contribute something to the understanding of a subject that has given me so much pleasure and joy. It would also be wonderful to have the opportunity to share with others that feeling of pleasure and joy, through teaching. My experiences with teaching, as a tutor, as a teacher, as a Subject Head in Mathematics and as a speaker in teacher workshops, have evoked favorable responses and have been thoroughly enjoyable.
There are many goals I have set for myself in pursuing this studies, both personal and professional, I feel that the distance education will enable me to achieve my career goals (a Head of the Department in Mathematics) and my goal to be a well-rounded educator, being knowledgeable and having skills in many areas not just an expertise in one. Completion of the program will also give me the confidence to continue the learning process throughout my life not just for the short time.
I expect the graduate work at XXXX to be demanding, challenging, and ultimately rewarding. I look forward to the experience from an intellectual as well as social point of view -- I hope to learn and grow as an individual, a competent teacher and a leader. I hope that I will be allowed to do so at XXXX.
