Undergraduate / Legacy, pride, challenge, pursuit of something great; Air Force Academy "why attend?" [3]

It Means More to Me.
What does The Air Force Academy mean? To my father it means legacy, it means hope and security, to my grandpa it is tradition, to my friends it means I must hate having fun and I must love push-ups. To me, The Academy is not only legacy, but pride, challenge, and the pursuit of something bigger than yourself. When one stands graduating at a typical university, they carry only knowledge and a degree, when one stands a graduate of an academy you stand an officer, learned, and strong. I pursue the academies because I want nothing more than to be that officer; Standing in my blues proudly representing my country and confident that I am prepared to face the world.

Initially, family Legacy was the integral part of my decision to seek an appointment. The military has a long history within my family, specifically the Air Force. My dad, my grandpa, and both of my great grandpas were in the Air Force. I wish to carry on their legacy and find the same satisfaction and fulfillment that they found while serving their country. In addition, the pride that follows such a commitment will carry me through any uncertainty. The opportunity to attend The United States Air Force Academy would make not only my family proud but fill me with an indispensable feeling of accomplishment.

Finally, I found that my desire was not simply an issue of pride, but a personal enterprise to overcome challenges and test the strength of my character. I consider myself to be a particularly strong individual with great integrity, but the academy life would prove my true capacity. As a cadet I would be tested and pushed to become better than I ever would have been otherwise. In the end I aim to become a member of something vast and admirable, to challenge myself and uphold the traditions of my family.
