Undergraduate / Rutgers Essay - Living in New Jersey, Indian descent, Hindu, Boy Scout [2]

Prompt:
Rutgers University is a vibrant community of people with a wide variety of backgrounds and experiences. How would you benefit from and contribute to such an environment? Consider variables such as your talents, travels, leadership activities, volunteer services, and cultural experiences.

Living in New Jersey for the majority of my life, I have always been surrounded by a diverse community of individuals (but during a short tenure of 6 months in Florida I wasn't surrounded by as much diversity.) Moving to a city filled with predominantly Hispanics, it was a very tough but great challenge getting accustomed to the cultural and lingual barriers. Being from Indian descent and presenting my cultural background and traditions to the school and community helped broaden traits within them, for example; introducing Indian food to everyone at a social gathering. Attending college in Florida aided me in discovering the countless opportunities available for college students and how student life plays a major roll throughout college. I am assertive that the unique community of Rutgers will benefit significantly from my ingenuous attributes and help me sharpen my interests.

Being raised as a Swaminarayan Hindu, I was taught to attain eternal bliss in the form of charity work. Becoming a youth leader under the organization Anoopam Mission for children across the country, I have learned a great deal about spiritual notions of Hinduism. Devoting several months a year to lead the youth for this organization is the same devotion put into the Rutgers community. The role of being a leader is to help people, which can inspire others to shoot for the stars and accomplish their goals.

The character built as a Boy Scout is one like no other, irreplaceable. "Do a good turn daily." The slogan, which has been with me since day one of entering Boy Scouts, is one that I apply to my life every day. When I first joined scouting I never had thought about volunteering anywhere outside of Anoopam Mission, but once I found out it was mandatory I signed up to do a clean up for the local church just to get it over with. The second I started volunteering I absolutely fell in love with it knowing that I was helping out in the community and making an area look better than ever. Volunteering portrayed to me a different outlook on life that I could spread throughout the entire vibrant Rutgers community. With much greater community service programs Rutgers offers, like ones for Hurricane Sandy relief efforts, I can significantly make a positive impact on the lives of others.

The opportunities found at Rutgers are truly inimitable because they offer a distinct individual like me the ability to find a way to get involved and find students with the same interests. I know that my exclusive skills being the aptitude to lead, serve others, and trail my interests; I will positively influence the vibrant community of Rutgers.
