Graduate / Statement of Interest for M.Eng in Computer Networks [4]
Hello guys, I am so exhausted and need your help and feedback on my statement. Appreciated!!!
Instructions: The statement is about 500 words in length that should address:
- your reasons for graduate study in Engineering;
- the research interest(s) you may wish to pursue;
- how your previous studies and experience have prepared you for the program; and
- your career objectives and how this degree program relates to them.
Looking forward to an industry-oriented rigorous training and progressing independent research ability is exactly the reason why I apply for Master of Engineering in Computer Networks at xxx. My research interests in Master's studies include high-performance highly reliable enterprise network design as well as server network, server clustering and virtualization in particular.
The high complex computer-integrated manufacturing demands highly reliable network and data traffic control. But from time to time, unforeseen network congestions do happen and cause process disruptions and frustrations in manufacturing. Although the problems are constantly "fixed", the question is: Are they really solved? This question led me to the research in the networks.
Since then I seized every opportunity and exposure to seminars, independent courses and trainings in system administration, Unix, shell scripting, client/server OS, the OSI and TCP/IP models, dynamic protocols, basic LAN switching and IP routing technologies. As a test engineer for xxx at xxx, I studied many technical articles in server and network from Sun Knowledge through partner service, such as RAS, DR, failover and service management.
As my research continued, I found that some methodologies like stop-and-wait and CSMA/CA in data flow control and congestion avoidance could be the solution. Similar techniques were simulated in the project when I designed the system test for over 50 Serengeti and LW8 mission critical servers. The idea is simple, yet viable. If the system test can pipeline multiple client accesses to prevent client access collisions, then the data traffic can be shaped and bandwidth usage can be capped at a lower level. In addition, if the system test can differentiate network conditions each with own transmission strategy, in the event of temporary network difficulty the client will buffer data and resend later instead of continuous requesting for transmission. The result shows that the network performance does improve in the area where the system test is implemented with data transmission control.
Moving forward as pursuing my career as a network engineer, I have the urge to upgrade my academic qualifications in computer networks. The Master's program at xxx is well designed that will bring me both the rigorous theoretical studies and the latest industry technologies in networks. The lab has a wide selection of equipment from the industry leaders that will further polish my training with practical skills. Your program truly provides me the best opportunity to bridge the gap in qualifications with competency.
During Master's studies, I want to delve deeper into L2/L3 dynamic protocols, optimal redundancy in resilient network design, load balancing and traffic managing. I am also interested in extending my knowledge and experience in high-end enterprise systems to server clustering. I would like to study how virtualization can be utilized to pool and provision a group of systems such that all resources can be aggregated with a simple yet manageable and portable virtual environment. After reviewing the curricula, I am sure that my study interests can be greatly covered by the courses instructed by Dr. xxx, Dr. xxx and Mr. xxx. Their expertise in teaching and researching will certainly benefit and turn my Master's studies into a very informative, efficient and project based learning journey.
With a keen interest in networks and dedication to learning, a problem-solving mindset and engineering experience, I have well prepared myself with determination and motivation to undertake and successfully complete the program.
