THE MAKING OF PAPER UMBRELLAS
Paper umbrellas are popular stuff of people in Asia. They are widely used because of their functions of protecting people from rain and sunlight. They are also eye-catching. This report describes how a paper umbrella is made.
Paper umbrella production is a complicated process including several phases. Firstly, the bamboo log is cut and the bark is shaved off. Then, the log is split into strips of equal thickness before the ribs are grouped into the bundle. Afterwards, the tiny holes are bored at specific points of the ribs by a traditional drill. Once the ribs are inserted into slots of a hand-carved wooden hub, the scaffold is attached and the string is thread through holes in the frame ribs with the purpose of supporting the umbrella's paper skin. In the next step, the bark of saa tree is soaked and boiled to soften it prior to being mashed with wooden mallets so as to turn it into pulp. After being bleached and washed, the pulp is dumped and stirred in a large basin of water and the floating pulp is caught, using plastic screens. Subsequently, the screens are left under the sun until the layers of pulp are dried and become sheets of paper. Following that, the pieces of paper are saturated with glue and the umbrella is dried before three coats of oil paint are applied in order to waterproof the paper. Finally, the design is painted on the umbrella's paper by an artist and the final product is ready to be used.
