Writing Feedback / 'The solid state; crystalline and amorphous solids' - learning scientific writing [2]
Hi everyone, I'm totally new to scientific writing and really want to learn it. I'm a science student and want to get good marks in exam, which is possible if I know the correct organization, construction and format of scientific writing. I want to make my writing interesting, unique and more marks bearing, but j don't know how to do this. That's just a try to learn the sentence construction and I know there'll be many mistakes but please help me learn, Thanks.
The solid state:
Matter; anything with mass that occupy space, is consists of minute particles; atoms. Intermolecular forces between these little entities define the state of matter; the properties of matter at specific conditions.
Solid state is characterized by its hardness and unchangeable volume. The uniqueness is because of the strong inter molecular attractions between the particles constituting the substance. The forces need specific amount of energy to enable the particles get rid to them to enter the liquid phase; melting, or to a direct gaseous phase; sublimation.
But there's more to the story, inter molecular forces define the solid state and the particles arrangement divide solid into two basic types:
the crystalline solids
The amorphous solids.
Crystalline solids:
Derived from Greek, crystal means "ice". Crystalline solids basically characterized and differentiated from amorphous solids by their sharp melting points, are the solid containing specific geometry of particles within them. The specific geometry make all the bonds to break at the same temperature, so melting occur at a specific temperature.
Example explaining the crystalline solid is, the crystalline ice; melting at 0°C at 1atm. As the number of particles and bonds per unit area are same all over the crystal, every part melt at the same temperature as the other parts melt.
Amorphous solids:
the solids containing disorganized particles arrangement, is characterized by having no sharp melting point. Taking the example of plastic, while providing heat the plastic don't have a sharp change from a solid phase to liquid or gaseous phase. Instead, it burn, melt and produce smoke at the same time,showing indefinite melting point and the amorphous nature.
