Tell us about a personal quality, talent, accomplishment, contribution or experience that is important to you. What about this quality or accomplishment makes you proud, and how does it relate to the person you are?
There are those who will only do exactly what is expected of them, and wait for a task to be assigned before acting, and then there are those who are proactive in searching for ways to contribute and make life easier for others. It is this second group that is more likely to make and sustain positive relationships, which are the backbone of a fulfilling personal and professional life.
My most notable personal quality would be being helpful; yes it may sound very simple and common but is quite the opposite, complex and rare. When I say being helpful I am not referring to the cliché of helping old people cross the street, but to other more significant ways, such as helping friends with homework or your family do chores. Furthermore, it can refer to listening to people's problems and giving them constructive advice which is a very important part of human development. Helping others takes the selfishness in our lives and replaces it with selflessness.
Altruism is beneficial not only to you but to the people you help. One act of kindness turns into countless acts of kindness as it is contagious and helps in creating a positive environment for yourself and the people around you.
I believe that, in order to lead a valuable and fulfilling life one has to seek the happiness of others as well as oneself. The warm fuzzy feeling you get by helping someone is truly unparalleled.It is a quality I take pride in and is often overlooked as people can take it for granted and think of it as a social norm even though it does not have to be. It is a very sociable quality as it allows you to empathize with others and connect with people on an emotional level.
Helping other individuals with their problems has sometimes put my own problems into perspective as the problems I feel are a big deal can be insignificant compared to the challenges others are facing and has allowed to me to reflect upon myself giving me a clearer understanding of myself and how to deal with my problems.
Currently I tutor a student in the year below, I help him in areas of Physics and Maths he does not fully comprehend. We meet twice a week for an hour and discuss any issues with which he needs help. I am glad to be able to help him academically as it reinforces my understanding of the subjects as well as demonstrating my approachability .I am always happy to help my peers whenever I am able, in any area they require.This has really helped me open myself to understanding different perspectives and being more versatile.
I aspire to be an engineer a profession which requires a substantial amount of collaboration and consideration of colleagues along with the people whose lives will be affected by my professional practice. I regard this personal quality to be an essential prerequ
