Scholarship / Math - more numbers and less English [2]

Prompt 1: Discuss the subjects in which you excel or have excelled. To what factors do you attribute

I never thought about having a particular subject that I was excelled in when I lived in Thailand. I thought that every subjects were the same for me since everything were taught in my language which is Karen. When I left Thailand and moved to America in 2010, math had become the subject that I feel excel in because it had to do with more words unless it a problem solving.

In my 7th grade year which was my first year in America, my math teacher was Ms.Johnson who taught ELL ( English language learner) math and we work with numbers most of the time at level one. She knew that we don't know English much so she would teach her class in differents way so the students would understands. She would even learned the number in our languages such as Karen, Spanish, and somali. She would also encouraged her students by recognizing our achievements with small rewards such as stickers or pencils. In class, I get most of the stickers all the time which made me proud of myself. I was the most outstanding in class since most of the students were new to America like me and they were scared to talk. I helped the teacher too by helping other students when she was busy helping another student. Some students were scared to talk to to the teacher so they ask me for help instead and it felt good when I get to help them. Sometime I help them and forgot to do my work because i love to help them and hate seeing them struggle. I know how it feel not to get the problem and feeling lost in class me feeling lost in English class. In class, sometime I finish the problem the first one so I don't have anything to do and I ask the teacher to give me new challenging problem so I can get ready for the next level. I don't want to just sits there in class and do nothing. I want to get to the next higher level like other people so I try to pushing myself toward so i can catch up with the rest of the students in regular class. What motivated more to do well in math class was that if we keep doing well in math class we will get to moved up to new level so it pushing me to try new challenging. Math had become one of my favorite subject because I don't know English much and I find it easier compare to other subjects that mostly had to do with English. Whenever it was time to go to math class, I was so excited to go to that class out of other classes. The way ms. Johnson encouraged her students and how much she put her effort make me more interest in math. Later on, I enjoy even more doing math because I felt accomplished by many other teacher and students. I also found out that the benefit of math is everywhere.

When I joined choir in my 9 grade year, sight reading and sight singing were easily for me because counting beats and rests was all math. Not only choir class, but for physic and chemistry class because they works with number. The hard problem I that I use to practice now help me with this.
