Scholarship / Electronics Workshop, GPS watch, ice-cream and photovoltaic system; Chevening 'leadership' question [3]

Hello everyone,

I would appreciate your help and comments to this essay as parte of my Chevening application. Thank you very much!

Leadership and Influence Question
Chevening is looking for individuals that will be future leaders or influencers in their home countries. Explain how you meet this requirement, using clear examples of your own leadership and influencing skills to support your answer.

One of the most important courses of my undergraduate final year was Electronics Workshop. It required all the knowledge learned throughout the career in order to develop a six-month project in groups of fifteen people. This course was role-based and the first day my partners postulated me as the "CEO" of my group. It was both an honour and a big responsibility for me to lead my team, as I was responsible for designs coordination, schedule management and budget allocation of our product. I identified the strengths and interests of my teammates in order to distribute tasks in the best possible way. I often had to take crucial decisions so as to achieve our goal in the established dates. Fortunately, I always had the support of my partners as we trusted each other. At the end we achieved to successfully build our own GPS pocket watch, presenting it in our university's technical fair, which was a great triumph for all of us.

During my internship at one of the largest ice-cream producers in Colombia, I was assigned as the leader of the innovative energy efficiency measures in one of its factories. There I had the opportunity to work with the food plant workers who were pursuing technical degrees in electricity and related. Since they worked every day at each process, they had all the knowledge about the ice-cream production and its inefficiencies, but lacked the hierarchy to take decisions. As the electrical engineering intern, they came to me looking for guidance about their ideas and proposals. We identified the most effective and less expensive ones in order to suggest them in the Energy Efficiency Committee which I attended. Finally, with the support of our bosses, their enthusiasm, and my help, we managed to implement several of these projects, improving some key energy indicators in the company.

Last year I was contestant of the Solar Decathlon Latin America and Caribbean 2015. I enrolled my University team helping to develop the conceptual design that allowed us to entry the competition. When we got accepted, each one of the existing members was assigned to recruit and lead a group of its specialty. I became the electrical team leader, working with six teammates to design the electrical and photovoltaic system of our house. As it was a long project, in which we had to work with interdisciplinary groups, I perceived conflicts as well as motivation peaks and lows in my team, which I always tried to battle. The pillar of our group was a really good relationship, something that was also perceived by the others members of our team. I divided our tasks according to our interests and abilities, submitting all the required drawings and narratives in time. At the contest final month, when we had to build our house, we managed to overcome all kind of difficulties and finish in the required term. We even won a prize in the Energy Balance Contest, thanks to all the efforts of my group.
