Undergraduate / Art, music, poetry, knowledge, love of life and humorous spirit vs kalashnikovs. Pitzer- Core Values [2]

At Pitzer College, five core values distinguish our approach to education: social responsibility, intercultural understanding, interdisciplinary learning, student engagement, and environmental sustainability. As agents of change, our students utilize these values to create solutions to our world's challenges.

Reflecting on your involvement throughout high school or within the community, how have you engaged with one or more of Pitzer's core values?

No pasarŕn

I am Now wearing this t-shirt with the slogan NO pasarŕn, a t-shirt that exactly 218 courageous interactors have and wear as a symbol of our community, and as proof of our engagement and belief in change.

No pasarŕn in Shakespeare's language, means "they will not pass" They who? , the terrorists.
No pasarŕn is the leitmotiv Spanish republicans used against the fascists of Franco (1936-1939) and it is also a slogan that we, Interactors, along with hundreds of attendees, screamed on the international day of poetry to say that we are not frightened by terrorism.

Being the Leader of the Regional activities department, the department responsible for interclub activities, which join all Interact clubs in my home town and organize an event for a common interest, my team and I planned a cultural event on the international day of poetry to sensitize Tunisians about the importance of the citizen's voice in the war against terrorism.

The common belief nationally and worldwide acknowledges that fighting terrorism is not the citizen's duty; it is more a political counter-terrorism combat. However, as an active citizen I believed that each individual in Tunisia and globally has the social responsibility to say NO to terrorism, including the kids, as they call us.

We have organized an event called No pasarŕn_ a poetic afternoon where professional poets, apprentice young poets, slammers, singers and dancers performed all in the cause of standing against terrorism and citizens who shared our mission came to share their voices_

The terrorist's weapons were Kalashnikovs; our weapons were art, music, poetry, knowledge, love of life and our humorous spirit.

The demonstration was planned before the catastrophe hit on Wednesday, March 18th 2015. The Bardo Museum attack did not stop us. It boosted not only our will but also our devotion to deliver our voice and stand firmly against terrorism.

We have organized, mentored, they have attended, sang, danced, read their poems but we all shared the same mission: To say loudly and clearly that we prefer light to darkness, that we spread life when the terrorists spread death.

By choosing a public symbolic place in Tunisia to welcome this occasion, a place where a political activist was shot by an extremist and died two years ago, we wanted to send a message.

That we as teenagers are not afraid of those modern ages retarded that hide in mountains, in dark places and are afraid of the light of modernity.

If I were by my own, manifesting against terrorism, as an individual I would not have a considerable impact. Fortunately, I knew how to motivate my team to join me in that mission and successively we have motivated the other clubs and most importantly our parents, our neighbors and even our grandparents to reunite on a Saturday afternoon, with our Tunisian flags, strong hearts and national engagement.

Through this experience, I have learnt the true meaning of student engagement in a social responsibility.
