Graduate / The journey from a Plant Engineer to an Entrepreneur. SOP for supply chain management [2]

Supply chain management SOP

We are standing at a juncture in the course of high competitive environment where customer satisfaction is the biggest asset to a company. Business needs can only be met by utilizing existing resources by more than 100%. The magnitude of such global competitiveness can be gauged from many industry examples viz. the rivalry of Ola and Uber in India where Ola being the first entrant & market leader of mobile taxis in the country and on the other hand Ubers stands out as a global giant as a big rival. So gaining from being the first one in the market was the talks of 90's. To make a mark in the industry it's not only the good quality of product you are providing but also the timely & safe delivery of the same. The answer to such problems is effective supply chain management. My interest is to increase the profitability of the company by developing innovative methods of managing complex supply chains by integrating frugal engineering. I believe as supply chain is deeply involved with every person living on earth, supply chain management is the present & future towards globalization. Hence, I firmly believe that Masters degree in Supply Chain and Logistics from XXXX will serve as a catalyst to achieve my goals.

As a school student, I made various working models of wind mill, Wired remote controlled cars and boats by using aftermarket parts as raw materials such as motors, waste packing materials, broken toys etc. all of them inspired from a famous cartoon series Dexter's Laboratory. This interest instilled me to take science as my senior secondary majors. During studies in my leisure time I used to visit my father's factory (Manufacturing Of butt hinges) and observe various processes and asked questions from the factory engineer. All these experiments and experiences instilled in me the unquenchable thirst to know more about automobiles. Thus, I decided to pursue Mechanical engineering and finally secured admission in XXXXIndia. Despite having laboratory subjects, the curriculum was biased towards theory. Thus in pursuit of extracurricular practical exposure, I was motivated to start off with wired Pick and place Robot and secured 3rd position in the national level round at IIT,Bombay. The idea of making Pick and place robot came from seeing workers in my fathers factory using only physical power for material handling, thus the concept was to make material handling easy and automated. The second thought came up of guiding robots on a guided path to assist material handling in real time, so I took a project of making wireless autonomous line follower robot using arduino micro controller under the guidance of Prof. Fred Martin of University of Massachusetts, Lowell. In the 3rd year of under graduation I studied Operations Research and learnt key concepts of Critical Path Method & Program Evaluation and Review Technique. After college hours, I worked in Mr. Rooster(restaurant) as a part time kitchen coordinator. I helped them in optimizing inventory levels to maintain balance in cash flows and demand of items by using daily sales data based on concepts learnt in Operations Research. My skills in solving problems analytically motivated me to take part in XX Igniters case study competition organized by XXX, a $16.5billion company wherein I came first and got an opportunity to work in XXXX for 6months as an intern wherein I played a key role in implementing Jishu Hozen-3 (TPM pillar). The zeal of taking challenges and working against the odds landed me a job in my final year in XX in Plant Engineering Department wherein I worked as a coordinator to implement Advanced Product Quality Planning(APQP) and XXXX projects on existing line while taking care of current four engine models. While working on this we faced a number of challenges from developing Tools & fixtures, production capacity constrains, design issues, prototype delays etc. One of the biggest challenge which we faced was online storage of parts, as it was impossible to store parts of all models together. We came up with the idea of online kitting system as per the model in which 70% of parts would be fed in newly designed kits which would be fed in respective pallets. With successful implementation of the same we could also increase the online storage capacity, decrease error rate of wrong fitment of parts and added space for sub assembly stations required for production enhancement in the second phase. Due to my exceptional performance I was specially trained by XX Institute of Quality for Pre-Production Part Approval Process (PPAP) and later endowed the responsibility to manage the change as Plant Engineering Change Notice (ECN) coordinator for Engine, Transmission And Axle Department in cross functional team of more than 80 people from diverse functions including design, development and customer care. As a PPAP Expert, I also represented Plant Engineering team in the ECN Meetings headed by Quality Planning and GMs of Company . In addition to my responsibilities, I was actively involved with SAE India even after college. I was a member of organizing committee for "A World in Motion (AWIM)-SAE", mobility contests for students up to Grade 6 where in students used to learn basics of car modeling and how aerodynamics play important role in car design.

This had played a key role in developing my interpersonal skills and leadership capacities and after 1.5years of experience gave me courage to climb another step of life that was quitting my existing job and joining my family business of manufacturing butt hinges. The job role entirely changed from doing things to managing them. The place where I was solely responsible from sourcing to dispatch. I made some process breakthroughs and thus increasing the production by 5%. Standardization and setting quality checks were the main things I could maintain but one thing that always troubled me was that I could do only a little with sourcing and dispatch then one of my friend introduced me to an online course. I started with edX course of supply chain design & analytics wherein I learnt how to use data analytically. I started to apply them practically by taking decisions which were earlier made based on experience to data based decisions. which has led to improved lead time thus improving customer satisfaction.

Entrepreneurship has definitely polished out an all-rounder out of a raw graduate engineer but the researcher and the student remain far from being satisfied, for, the learning process is still constrained. Eventually, the increasing interest to devote myself to research snowballed into a logical conclusion - to pursue graduate studies at a reputed international university.

The journey from a Plant Engineer to an Entrepreneur has given me immense experience, I now find myself to ready to take the next step towards my career goals, which is to pursue my Masters in Supply Chain & Logistics at XXXX. Studying here would mean learning from the top minds in the world and an opportunity to interact with students from across the globe that converge at Singapore for shaping their future as Singapore being the hub of International Business.
