Undergraduate / Personal statement for a BSW Program - reasons for BSW degree [3]

My reasons for choosing to seek a BSW degree, the factors I considered in deciding to do so now, and alternative careers I have explored.

The University of Utah Bachelor of Social Work Program

I chose to seek a BSW degree because I was a high school dropout. I watched as each one of my close friends walked across the stage to gather their certificates that represented all their hard work and success thus far. For months I looked for work, no one could hire me without a high school education. I often wondered to myself how I even got here and how this happened to me. Until one day I pondered a different question. What can I do? So I did what everyone does when they need answers, I looked it up on the internet. I found a program at Department of Workforce Services, it was called WIOA Youth Program. With the help of this program I got my Diploma. I didn't get a fancy ceremony like my peers, but I cried tears of pure happiness when I received my High School Diploma in the mail.

I acquired a great job working with children at Hill Air Force Base, and I had been working there for two years. Then all of the sudden that question popped into my head again. What else can I do? I knew that college was an option for me, and I also had confidence that I would be able to accomplish this. I had found my calling, my true passion, at this point. I want to help others. I considered specific careers like parole officer, teacher, occupational therapist, or a nurse. The more I learned about those careers, the more they didn't feel right. After some research I came across human service workers. I found casework, counseling, therapy, and administrative work quite appealing. To my delight I learned that with a MSW I could do any one of those amazing things! I thought about the social worker at the WIOA program that helped me get the resources to finish my high school education, and that is when everything just clicked. I wanted to continue my education and become a social worker. I want to do everything in my power to be the best social worker possible, and use the skills and knowledge I acquire to help others.

I am now nearing the end of my Associate Program. The University of Utah Bachelor of Social Work Program is my next step to accomplishing my dream. I chose your program because peers have said to me that the professors make you feel like colleagues. This is very important to me. I find it beneficial to have professors that take the time to really focus on involving me in the education process. The University of Utah also has an impressive graduation rate, that really appealed to me as well. This shows me that, as a school, you care about my success. I met with Elizabeth Perez the academic advisor for the social work program. She told me the amazing qualities that the program has like small class sizes, a well-constructed course schedule, and the opportunity to also participate in the Substance Use Disorder Treatment Training Program concurrently.
