Undergraduate / My personal point of view on animal cruelty and abuse [5]

UT Essay: Choose an issue of importance to you-the issue could be personal, school related, local, political, or international in scope-and write an essay in which you explain the significance of that issue to yourself, your family, your community, or your generation.

Early mornings start when I emerge from my shower. Without fail every morning when the water from the shower is shut off my cat Remmy charges for the bathroom door. Before I can get both feet on the floor my very boisterous cat is jamming his fluffy white paws as far under the door as he can reach, howling the entire time. Then once I open the door to let him wander in to the bathroom he strolls in acting nonchalant as if he wasn't just acting like he was having a panic attack. Why anyone would every want to hurt my cat or any other animal is beyond me. I am one of sixty million households in the United States that have a companion pet. When you imagen a companion pet you may think of a puppy or kitten brought into a house for a child or adult to love and take care of. You may even picture a little girl carrying around her cat or dressing it up in doll clothes then pushing it around in a stroller, which is one thing I enjoyed doing during my childhood. Though what people do not think of is a 17-year-old girl pleading guilty to baking her former roommate's cat to death in a 500° oven. 1 Animal brutality takes place everyday, committed by a range a different people, but nothing makes it right. Whether it is a violent hand or a well intentioned hand, I believe any animal put to death is a wrongful death.

Neglected, stabbed, beaten and abused, mans best friend has become mans best victim. In 2008 a reported 5,617 animals died from abuse or neglect in the United States alone. 2 When people find themselves unable to take care of their animals they often abandon them, possibly thinking someone else will find and take care of the animal. When I adopted my cat I learned their owner moved away locking them in the house with out any food or water when he was a baby. I can not imagine how someone could abandon such a loving animal. One case of abandonment happened in Roanoke, where Police are looking for the person who left a puppy in a cage on the side of a road. When help finally came the puppy was found lying motionless on a pillow in the cage. Police say the dog died from the sweltering heat. 3 You can't say for certain whether the person left the puppy with intentions of it dying, but there are some people who in fact, intentionally, harm animals. In Houston Deputies are looking for the person responsible for decapitating a tame deer at a wildlife sanctuary at Bear Creek Park. 4 It is pointless and cruel cases like these flood the ASPCA (American Society for the Protection of Cruelty to Animals) offices around the country daily. Though, cruelty doesn't seem to be a word that comes up when talking about humane euthanasia.

It is widely accepted that 9.6 million animals are euthanized annually in the United States every year. 5 These euthanasia victims are due to over crowding, though some may argue that with the 6 billion people and growing, maybe animals aren't the ones who are over crowding. It is hard to come up with a really a good reason why we don't have the necessary means to find foster homes for these over abundant animals. Another reason animals are euthanized is because of illness that occurred before or during their time at a shelter. Though as a living creature aren't our bodies susceptible to disease, and illness? When a member of our family becomes ill we do not discard them, we take care of them. We pay more months of hospital bills, even if it takes years for a member of our family to get better, we don't leave them. I am sure if animals could talk they would tell you they want to live. Animals don't want to be euthanized because they are sick or have a broken leg. If people can live through cancer why can't our pets? We should be the ones to pass judgment on whether an animal is well enough to live or not.

Animal cruelty is bound to happen. With further knowledge and understanding I hope to be able to educate people on the prevention of animal abuse and neglect. One of the things I have done is sign a petition for the World Society for the Protection of Animals. With my vote I am telling the Government that animals matter to me, because when it comes to having a central nervous system, and the ability to feel pain, hunger, and thirst, a rat is a pig is a dog is a boy. 6 After all this world is not always black and white, sometimes we have to step back and see things from a different point of view, even a point of view that can not be spoken.

Essays / Help on inclass essay (my future career goals) [8]

Did you wan to become a private school teacher or Coach or a private school coach?

I think it would be best to stick with one thing you know most about and have the most history with. If you play hockey or lacrosse you could talk about how your history playing either of the two has inspired you to coach and teach other about the sport.

I would stick with a goal of becoming a teacher or coach but not both. That way you avoid jumping around between topics

Undergraduate / 'accidental discovery of Boston Univ. was through a popular college guide' - BU [2]

"...winters, save your cookies or get a scholarship , and try to..."

"I visited BU this past September. (?) Although my accidental discovery of Boston University was through a popular college guide, the sense of relief I feel when I realize I have found my first choice school completely outweighs that fact. "

As I curiously flipped through the "Fiske Guide to Colleges 2008," the phrases "funky, artsy, youth-oriented urban setting" grabbed my attention. Without hesitation, I vigorously read the review, in between paragraphs asking myself, "Is it possible this school actually exists?" Instantly, I researched more about BU and Boston in general, and discovered that a friend's godfather had previously attended. His words of wisdom; bring a parka for the brutal winters, and try to get Professor Caine for Psychology. This past fall I visited BU, and since my accidental discovery of Boston University I have felt a sense of relief realizing I have found my first choice school.

This brings it to 672 with spaces

Writing Feedback / There two main kinds of justice in our life; Justice (English 1) [4]

"conscience to life .Voltaire "

conscience to life. Voltaire

"Also in old time history men always had better rights than women. And people started realizing it is wrong."

Additionally, in old time history men always had better rights than women, and people started realizing it is wrong.

Just look for repetition. Thesaurus online is my best friend. You do not need to use additionally, it was just a way of showing different ways to add on to a paragraph.

Writing Feedback / The tell tale heart by A. Poe - story comment [5]

"The story is about a guy who is living with this old man with a pale blue eye with a thin white film over it"

The story is about a gentleman who is living with an old man who has a pale blue eye with a thin white film over it.

It is good just considering revising and make sure to not use so much repetition of words.

Undergraduate / (Carly, true friend) - Someone who has made an impact on your life [5]

Well I am not sure as to how this was helpful in the least.

If you give a man a fish, he will eat for a day. If you teach him how to fish, he will eat all his life.

The only thing I am getting is the fish. Your not telling me how to make it better, or less chaotic only pointing out that it is chaotic.

You can not point out what is unsatisfactory and leave satisfied thinking you helped.

Undergraduate / (Carly, true friend) - Someone who has made an impact on your life [5]

"Will you be my friend?" A question almost muffled by the roar of a second grade class room. Though, I was only eight, it was a question that would change my life forever. Before me was a tiny, freckled faced, frizzy haired, little girl, named Carly. Oh, Carly. I've learned a lot from her. Funny little things like, the true meaning of being a friend, and thinking completely outside of the box. These are some of the things I have plugged into my personality, over the course of knowing her. Though the experiences I have gone through with Carly are what have impacted my life.

"Bad times have a scientific value. These are occasions a good learner would not miss." Ralph Waldo Emerson. Fourteen years is a long time to go without having a few lousy moments. In no way will I ever forget the night Carly and I spent in People's Valley. In the time that I have known this girl I have never seen her more sick then I did on this night. She was completely immobilized. Carly was unmistakably disoriented, regurgitated her dinner like a bird does in order to feed its young, only then to roll over in it while telling us she was fine, not realizing what she had done. Our friend's father gathered up her limp body that was still murmuring she was "fine" and laid her on the floor in the living room leaving me in charge of watching over her. Instead of taking my place on the couch I curled up next to my sick friend until she started to come to. Regardless of how bad she smelled at that time, I was there for her, like I knew she would have been for me. Well, the time shortly came where I needed her.

The call came in the early morning, early for a teenager anyways. "Um, can you give me a ride? There is a tarp flying off the end of my car" I promptly told her. "A what? Yeah sure I will be right over." Carly announced. The sight of a giant black tarp billowing out from under my small car along with what appeared to be a fire hose was obviously not what she had been expecting. Carly and our other roommate just started laughing at me. Then of course came story time. The night prior I was visiting my significant other and with all young couples we got into a little tiff. Upset I and discouraged I headed home. Half way home I decided I did not like leaving things on a sour note. Driving up a curvy road I pulled a u-turn, not the best u-turn in the world because I went almost completely over a fire hydrant. To this day I still do not know why the fire hydrant had a pole sticking out of it, and then a tarp wrapped around the pole. That was all I was willing to talk about at that time considering I had only had the car six month. Being the true friends they are they helped me remove the tarp from the axle of my car. Or I should say, they helped me cut the tarp off of my axle with a butter knife. I found the true friends, like Carly, love you no matter how early it is in the morning, and still have the energy to laugh. This was one of the stranger moments we had together, but she still got me to laugh about it. Nothing can compare to some of the out right bizarre moments we had in high school.

Wiccans are people who cast spells that are used for healing, love, or to cast out negative influences. Now growing up, as both only children, it was sometimes a struggle to find our true selves. When Carly, and I had become freshman, her father got remarried, that was about the time Carly told me she was going to be Wiccan. Though, the night Carly asked me to join her in stealing her father's truck, and drive in to the middle of the woods too cast spells was the moment I thought for sure my friend was ill. Since then I have overcome situations by thinking this way, it is not about thinking outside of the box, it is about taking the box completely away. My junior year of high school one of my class assignments was to make a poster representing purgatory. Although the majority of my class painted pictures of souls waiting to enter through the pearly gates, I drew Super Mario Brothers. I designed that one horrible level. You are just about to reach the castle at the end, and retrieve the Princess. Mario is storming through the evil mushrooms, tackling the turtles, and grabbing up coins left and right. Your heart is pounding, and the controls are sticky from your sweating palms grasping what could be the final count down. But blast! You fell down the hole again. If it was not for Carly showing me it is ok to be different I do not believe I would have been able to put myself out there, and take a risk. I have learned from her if you do not take the risk the can not get the reward.

I do not know a person that has saved peoples lives, someone that has overcome a life threatening illness, or someone nationally known for their greatness. I know Carly. I would not trade her for anyone. She has helped me become a better person, a more outgoing person, a person who is not afraid to say, yes I can. We have been through a lot. I am not proud of everything that has happened, but I have learned from everything Carly and I have gone through. They say learning is one of the building blocks of life, well, if this is true then she has given me a lot of blocks. She is a true friend, and I am a better person for knowing her.
